Geotechnical Research Engineer

ATI has a current need for a full-time Geotechnical Research Engineer. ATI is seeking a talented Geotechnical Research Engineer to join our team at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) supporting the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The ideal candidate will be responsible for planning, conducting, and analyzing geotechnical research projects focused on advancing infrastructure safety and sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Plan and execute geotechnical research projects to support FHWA initiatives.
  • Perform advanced geotechnical laboratory testing and data analysis.
  • Develop and implement numerical and constitutive modeling for geotechnical applications.
  • Utilize a variety of geotechnical data acquisition systems and sensors (e.g., strain gauges, accelerometers, tiltmeters, potentiometers, LVDTs, extensometers, and load cells).
  • Apply geotechnical modeling software (e.g., Plaxis, Abaqus) to simulate and analyze project scenarios.
  • Contribute to workshops, seminars, and technical committee meetings.
  • Prepare and write comprehensive research reports, journal articles, and conference papers.
  • Program in MATLAB and Python for data analysis and simulation tasks.


Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports, papers, and presentations.
  • Strong team collaboration skills.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States immediately.
  • Physical ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, navigate construction sites, and work outdoors.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience in geotechnical laboratory testing.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical modeling software.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Background in scour research or related topics.
  • Programming experience in coding languages such as MATLAB and Python for data analysis and simulation tasks.


Job Type: Full-time

Pay Range: $80,000 - $95,000/year depending on experience

Location: McLean, VA

Working Hours: Normal Work Hours - Monday - Friday (anticipate 40 per week).
