Northrop Grumman Tactical Space Systems is looking for a Guidance, Navigation, & Controls Engineering Functional Manager to manage a department of GNC Analysts. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the technical performance of an engineering team dedicated to developing GN&C solutions.

To be successful in this position you should be experienced in spacecraft guidance and navigation and control systems. Responsibilities include providing technical and strategic direction, coordination of assignments, hiring of new staff, and networking with Program Office and key stakeholders to identify opportunities and issues where the department needs to prioritize resources to address business demands. Additionally, you will pursue research and development efforts to improve the organization's products, tools and processes.

In this role, you will clearly demonstrate strong leadership skills and should have a track record as an effective communicator and problem solver who is able to develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You should be able to operate in a team environment and collaborate across the sector business areas as required to accomplish team and department goals.

In addition to the management responsibility, technical responsibilities include:
  • Perform GNC component trade studies (including make/buy trades and supplier identification/research). These components may include but are not limited to star trackers, lidars, GPS receivers, sun sensors, reaction wheels, IR cameras, inertia reference units and space based visible cameras
  • Work with the subcontracts/supply chain team as the technical lead to manage procurements, documentation, and design reviews
  • Work closely with multiple suppliers (domestic and international) to monitor procurement, manufacturing, and testing
  • Work closely across multiple subsystems, and present to managers and customers relevant GNC component data and/or reports. Communication is a critical element of your role
  • Be able to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Lead the effort between the component supplier, program, and subsystems to close out component related test failures and issues as they occur
  • Travel to and support launch site activities
  • Create and test component level scripts to verify the functionality of GNC components and work with team to integrate the components into the spacecraft
  • Be flexible with shift work during different phases of the program
  • Apply engineering principles, industry standards, company process, and knowledge of vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion, classical/modern control, and estimation theory to perform tasks to advanced program/project goals
  • Document designs, analysis, and test results and create presentation materials
  • Present designs, analysis, reviews, and test results to internal and external customers
  • Work well within small- to medium-sized groups
  • Utilize strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Leverage strong project leadership skills


To be successful in this role you should have demonstrated leadership experience, strong organization skills, and communication skills. Management experience is a plus but not required.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with at least 5 years of related experience in Guidance, Navigation, & Controls Analysis or related engineering. Experience can be considered in lieu of degree
  • Must demonstrate a strong customer focus and ability to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree, PhD
  • Experience managing a GN&C functional department or group
  • At least 9 years of direct related experience in Guidance, Navigation, & Controls engineering or related engineering
  • Exceptional leadership skills to coordinate collaboration across multiple engineering disciplines, along with the ability to effectively motivate people to work as an integrated team across locations, companies and cultures
  • The ability to resolve management and technical problems
  • Active DoD Top Secret and Special Access Program clearance

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
