Position Overview:
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), is seeking a highly motivated, diligent and thorough Environment, Health & Safety (ES&H) Specialist to join our Directorate safety office. This position will provide oversight and support of laser safety within LCLS laser laboratories. You will work in a crucial role within the LCLS Safety Office, interfacing with LCLS System Laser Safety Officers (SLSOs) and with the SLAC Laser Safety Officer (LSO) to coordinate the implementation of laser safety measures and procedures to mitigate laser hazards that are in compliance with SLAC policies for laser safety. You will support the application of training programs, the development and review of documentation, and the inspection of laser laboratories throughout the facility. Finally, you will advocate on behalf of LCLS to ensure that safety procedures and policies are effectively and consistently implemented, and work with the LSO to update these policies where appropriate. This position joins the LCLS ES&H team and reports directly to the LCLS ES&H Manager.

Your specific responsibilities include:
- Under minimal supervision, work with LCLS safety management to provide laser safety subject matter expertise and coordination of laser safety activities within LCLS
- Liaise with the SLAC LSO and advocate on behalf of LCLS to maintain the laser safety program, implement new systems, and develop procedures to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community
- Recommend and implement improvements in processes, designs, and procedures to improve the effectiveness of the laser safety program and/or to minimize the hazard potential.
- Identify and propagate lessons-learned and best practices for safety procedures and conventions across LCLS laser labs.
- Coordinate and approve onsite laser service contractor visits
- Participate in the creation, review, approval and organization of LCLS laser lab safety documentation in concert with SLSOs and LSO, ensuring simplicity, consistency and uniformity across labs wherever possible
- Support the LSO in the review of laser safety system PLC (programmable logic controller) logic and Initial Acceptance Test documentation for engineered laser safety systems in LCLS labs, and participate in the completion of laser safety system testing
- Provide mentorship and training for laser system supervisors and laser operators, including the administration and continued development of the laser safety practical training course
- Participate in field health & safety inspections of laser laboratories both independently and in coordination with the SLAC LSO to:
- Participate in the investigation of accidents, incidents, injuries and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., applied physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, etc.) and three years of relevant experience in occupational safety and health, laser operations, or other related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the direct and indirect hazards associated with lasers systems and methods for the control and mitigation of these hazards
- Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
- Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
- Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s)
