Your role in helping us shape the future:

U.S. News empowers everyone to thrive. As part of a growing health services research team, you will generate actionable insights for U.S. News clients from a trove of healthcare data: the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Virtual Data Research Center (VRDC). These clients subscribe to U.S. News' proprietary Hospital Data Insights (HDI) platform, which is currently constructed around the Best Hospitals rankings and ratings. You will enrich and expand the HDI value proposition with new data and analytical outputs that may guide hospital and healthcare quality improvement initiatives, market share strategies, and more.

You will work closely with the team of data scientists and analysts who produce the Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, leveraging their code and analytical strategies to better serve clients. You will also work closely with the market-facing product management team in an agile operating model.

The results of your work will receive the attention of a broad group of healthcare stakeholders, including leaders of health systems, and contribute to improving hospital quality and performance. You will have opportunities to engage with healthcare executives, researchers and clinicians. Your work will drive change in healthcare.

On a day-to-day basis, you will principally write and review code that operates on large datasets in the CMS VRDC. You will perform exploratory data analyses, generate reports to inform analytic strategy, and then execute on analytic plans. You will develop and refine measures and outputs that are useful to healthcare executives and decision makers.

Are you up to the challenge?
  • Write clean, well-documented code to manage complex data pipelines
  • Utilize statistical programs and packages in SAS, Stata, Python, and R to analyze large datasets and develop compelling data visualizations
  • Implement statistical models and algorithms to derive insights from healthcare data
  • Conduct rigorous code reviews to ensure code quality, scalability, and adherence to best practices
  • Perform data validation to ensure accuracy and reliability of analytical results
  • Interpret and translate data analyses into clear insights for stakeholders
  • Develop new and user-friendly visualizations of the analytics with product team
  • Work with product and development teams in an Agile development environment.


Position Requirements

You should definitely have:
  • Three years to five years of similar or related experience.
  • Master's degree or multiple years of professional experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, health economics or similar quantitative field
  • Experience using the CMS VRDC
  • A high degree of comfort with cleaning and managing of data sets containing millions of records
  • A grasp of modeling and statistical principles relevant to quality measurement
  • Ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with peers, senior leaders, and both internal and external clients
  • Ability to communicate methods concepts to people with non-technical backgrounds, internally and externally
  • An understanding of how healthcare providers and payers can utilize insights from your work
  • Fluency in SAS
  • Experience with database programming, in a language such as SQL or Postgres
  • Experience working in an Agile framework (e.g. Scrum)
  • Attention to detail, strong communication, organizational and time management skills


It would be nice if you had:
  • Experience collecting and validating primary data
  • Knowledge of multilevel models
  • Subject matter knowledge in one or more areas of clinical care
  • Experience using version control, particularly GitLab
  • Experience using Databricks
  • Fluency in Stata

  • The anticipated base salary for this position is $75,000 - $90,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, interview performance, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
