Description of Work
North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) Aviation Division Pilots provide aerial suppression of wildfires in designated areas of North Carolina and support a variety of missions including forest protection, forest management, search and rescue, passenger and supply delivery, fire reconnaissance, and other aerial support to an Incident Commander that may be deemed necessary.
The primary purpose of this position is to pilot a helicopter to provide aerial suppression of wildfires in designated areas of North Carolina and support a variety of missions. The helicopter pilot will support the fire crews with water/foam drops by means of a bucket that is attached to a cargo hook below the aircraft. Helicopters are also used for backfiring with an aerial ignition system and for evacuation of injured personnel to a medical facility when needed. This position is also required to support ground personnel in wildfire suppression operations by providing eyes in the sky for the incident commander and is relied upon to ensure for the safety of ground crews when assisting on wildfire suppression efforts.
The individual in this job position will also assist in the maintenance and upkeep of any aircraft that they operate and conduct supervisory and administrative work in managing and coordinating the flight operations and maintenance of all assigned missions.
NCFS Aviation helicopters are a state resource and may be temporarily located as needed to meet mission objectives throughout the entire State or the Nation if required.
Duty Station Location: Aviation West - Hickory Hangar 314 Hickory Airport Rd. Gate 9 Hickory NC 28601
Residency required within one (1) hour of the Duty Station located at: 314 Hickory Airport Road, Hickory NC 28601
This is a Helicopter pilot position.Necessary Special Requirements - Certification as a FAA commercial or airline transport pilot in airplanes and/or rotorcraft and possession of an FAA Class II Medical Certificate.

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and a minimum of 1500 hours of flight time in a closely related type of aircraft and/or type of mission, along with a minimum of three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
Necessary Special Requirements: Certification as a FAA commercial or airline transport pilot in airplanes and/or rotorcraft and possession of an FAA Class II Medical Certificate. May also require ratings in multi- engine (land), instrument flying, and others as assigned.

- Ability to pilot and navigate an aircraft at low altitudes over rugged and hostile terrain in adverse weather conditions.
- Knowledge of aircraft maintenance requirements and repair procedures
- Ability to work long hours in varying climatic conditions as well as the ability to establish effective working relationships with the public.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing and be able to represent the Division on aviation matters.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
- Knowledge of fire control techniques, fire behavior, aerial support functions needed in fire suppression operations, a background in Agriculture or Forestry and possess both an Airframe and Power Plant License along with an Inspection authorization certificate issued by the FAA.
1500 Hours Pilot in Command time
200 Hours cross country
150 Hours in Tail wheel aircraft
50 Hours night flying
50 Hours in aircraft with at least 450hp engines
10 Hours within the last 60 days
