Alberta Health Services is inviting applications from up to 4 Family Physicians to join the Department of Family Medicine in the Edmonton Zone.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital is an 800+ bed tertiary care hospital situated in the Edmonton inner city. The Hospital Medicine service admits to approximately 80+ acute Family Medicine inpatient beds divided within 4 multidisciplinary teams, rostered in weekly segments starting on Wednesdays. In addition to usual medical inpatient presentations in geriatrics, oncology, and multi-morbidity, our patients often have complex social and psychiatric presentations, including substance use disorders and homelessness. With the expansion into the 5 th team commencing on July 1 st , HMT is looking to hire new permanent staff physicians to join the team.
The physician role will be primarily clinical though they may have some educational requirements if a resident is on service that week. Edmonton Zone hospitals are affiliated with the University of Alberta and serve as important training facilities for residents and students. The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world's top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada's premier health-education institutions.
The physician will be responsible for admitting patients after discussion with the ER doctor, diagnostic work up, treatment and discharge planning in the context of the allied health care team. They are expected to be on site Wednesday to Tuesday daily during their scheduled week to round on patients, attend multidisciplinary rounds, and complete any admissions as they occur, in conjunction with a physician assistant during the day. The physician is expected to be accessible by telephone 24/7 during the week, and onsite physician support is provided by clinical assistants. Physician onsite hours are generally from 8 am to at least 2 pm, and up to 10 pm on evenings when the physician is on-take for the service (one in three days).

Qualifications
Successful Candidates will have a functional knowledge of resources and challenges in Alberta's primary health care system. This knowledge will be supported by the candidate having completed a two year Family Medicine Residency. Previous experience in acute hospital medicine would be an asset.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have superior interpersonal skills with a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and peer relationships. The successful candidate should be committed to fulfilling clinical and non-clinical duties as a representative of Family Medicine.
The successful candidate must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians and of Canada and for medical licensure in the province of Alberta. Successful applicants will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic appointment with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Family Medicine.
