Description & Requirements

Bloomberg News is looking for an experienced, enterprising reporter to lead our coverage on housing.

From affordability crises to policy battles, this is a beat that sits at the crossroads of government, markets, and daily life. You'll cover how federal, state, and local leaders are responding to the growing demand for affordable housing - and how those decisions ripple through the broader economy. We're looking for someone who can surface sharp insights, break news, and connect the dots between policy, regulation, and real-world impact.

A deep understanding of housing finance is essential, especially the role of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, ongoing debates over their conservatorship status, and the emerging conversation around their potential role in a sovereign U.S. wealth fund.

We'll expect you to:
  • Break news and deliver agenda-setting coverage on housing policy and its economic and political implications
  • Provide smart, big-picture reporting that places local trends in a national and global context
  • Monitor developments in Washington and beyond - from Capitol Hill to HUD - and track how those changes affect markets and communities
  • Cover the evolving roles of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with authority and insight
  • Collaborate across teams in Washington, New York, and beyond to elevate Bloomberg's housing coverage across platforms

You'll need to have:
  • 10+ years of journalism experience
  • Proven experience covering housing, finance, or economic policy
  • A deep understanding of housing finance systems, especially the roles of GSEs (government-sponsored enterprises)
  • Strong sourcing skills and a track record of breaking original stories
  • The ability to translate complex policies and market dynamics into clear, compelling journalism
  • A collaborative spirit and eagerness to work with colleagues across beats and bureaus
