Tycko & Zavareei LLP, a small public interest law firm with offices in Washington, DC and California, is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to join its team for an immediate opening.

This is a hybrid position, located in the Washington, DC Metro Area, with an anticipated May 2025 start date. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with preference given to those received by May 1, 2025.

We have an immediate opening for a Human Resources Generalist to join our team on a hybrid basis. This full-time position plays a critical role in executing the day-to-day HR operations that keep our firm running smoothly and our employees supported. The HR Generalist will collaborate closely with and report to the firm's Managing Partner. This is an ideal opportunity for an HR professional who enjoys hands-on, well-rounded HR work in a small mission-oriented and fast-paced business environment.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
  • Location: Washington, DC | Hybrid-on average 2 days in-office/week
  • Schedule: Full-time | Salaried | Exempt
  • Start Date: May 2025 (Preferred)

The HR Generalist will be responsible for a wide range of operational HR functions, including recruitment logistics, onboarding, benefits administration, performance tracking, compliance, employee communications, offboarding, and more. The ideal candidate has professional HR experience in a generalist role in a small to mid-size business environment with geographically diverse employees, and is an excellent communicator, detail-oriented, highly organized, and brings strong people skills to every interaction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Recruiting & Hiring
    • Coordinate job postings, manage ATS processes, and promote open positions across platforms
    • Communicate with recruiters and staffing agencies as needed
    • Screen applications, facilitate interviews, and manage recruitment communications
    • Lead new hire onboarding processes
  • HR Administration & Compliance
    • Maintain accurate employee records and ensure confidentiality, and manage legal retention requirements of all HR records and documents
    • Process new hire paperwork, changes, and terminations in HR systems
    • Ensure compliance with legal documentation and recordkeeping
    • Support payroll and benefits administration
    • Assist in compliance reporting and audit preparation
    • Provide guidance on leave of absence policies and administration to ensure compliance with applicable law and Firm policies and procedures
  • Employee Engagement, Support, and Relations
    • Facilitate performance reviews and track submissions
    • Organize wellness programs and internal communications
    • Maintain recognition calendars and coordinate staff appreciation efforts
    • Be a daily resource for employee questions about policies, benefits, and HR procedures
    • Provide guidance to managers on employee relations issues
    • Manage disciplinary actions, grievances and investigations
  • Training, Benefits, and Separation
    • Support internal trainings
    • Provide support for benefits enrollments, changes, and terminations, including coordinating with benefits administrator, vendors, and brokers
    • Coordinate offboarding tasks
    • Conduct and document exit interviews
    • Coordinate post-separation inquiries and tasks
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
  • Education and Experience:
    • Knowledge of human resources administration at a level normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree in human resources, organizational development business, or related field
    • 3+ years of professional experience in an administrative HR role, with demonstrated knowledge of HR best practices and multi-state employment laws and compliance requirements
    • Experience working within a law firm or professional services environment a plus
    • Bachelor's degree preferred
    • PHR or SHRM-CP certification a strong plus
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Excellent relationship-building, interpersonal and collaboration skills
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, in both in-person and remote-work environments
    • Meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills
    • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and simultaneously move forward multiple projects with varying deadlines
    • Familiarity and success with both independent, autonomous work, and collaborating in a small team environment
    • A problem-solver-ability to identify and analyze issues and problem and to recommend and implement effective solutions
    • Strong technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience with HRIS, benefits administration, and payroll systems
    • Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Comfortable with a high-volume of emails
  • Ability to reliably commute to our Washington, DC office on average 2 days/week
  • Ability to start May 2025 (preferred)
