We're looking for an HR Lead to join our HR team and help shape the future of enabling businesses to thrive and strengthen the communities they serve. You'll play a key role in all aspects of HR for a growing, fun, and hard-working group of teammates. You'll partner with leadership across the company to ensure our people practices are thoughtful, compliant, and aligned with our values. Your work will be supporting a distributed, mission-driven team that's passionate about fitness, martial arts, and empowering small businesses.

Role highlights:
  • Position type: Full time, exempt.
  • Work location & Schedule: This is an in-office position based in Fairfax, VA, a suburb of Washington, DC. Our business hours are 8am-5pm EST.
  • Compensation: $110,000 - $130,000 annually.


What you'll be doing: (Your responsibilities)
  • Own and continuously improve the full employee lifecycle-from recruiting and onboarding to performance, engagement, and offboarding, ensuring a thoughtful, consistent experience across a distributed team
  • Partner with our Talent Acquisition Manager and external recruiting to drive hiring strategy and optimize recruiting operations for speed, quality, and candidate experience
  • Lead bi-weekly payroll processing for U.S.-based employees and international contractors, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance
  • Maintain and evolve people policies, including the Employee Handbook, in alignment with federal, state, and international employment laws, especially those relevant to our Virginia HQ
  • Oversee benefits strategy, administration, and annual renewals; evaluate plan options, manage vendor relationships, and communicate offerings clearly to the team
  • Manage the performance review process (we use 15Five), support professional development initiatives, and enable managers to give meaningful, actionable feedback
  • Act as a trusted resource for employees and managers, offering guidance on sensitive issues, resolving conflicts, and promoting a positive, inclusive culture
  • Plan and support engagement initiatives in partnership with our Events team, including recognition programs, team-building activities, and values-aligned celebrations
  • Anticipate people-related needs before they arise; identify gaps, propose solutions, and independently drive projects forward with limited oversight
  • Stay current on HR trends and legal requirements, bringing strategic insight to improve our people operations at scale
What we're looking for: (Your Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 7-10 years of generalist HR experience, with deep expertise across recruiting, onboarding, benefits, employee relations, and compliance; prior experience in a high-growth tech or startup environment is strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. employment law and compliance; experience supporting global contractors and distributed teams is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize competing needs, and manage HR functions without micromanagement.
  • Experience with HR systems and tools like Gusto, 15Five, BreezyHR, and background check platforms (e.g., Checkr) and proficiency in managing communications and systems across other platforms like Slack, G Drive, and Asana.
  • Excellent communication skills; you're clear, approachable, and confident navigating sensitive conversations or ambiguity
  • A proactive problem-solver who's equally comfortable creating strategy and getting into the weeds to execute.
  • A people-first mindset that balances empathy with accountability; you care about doing what's right for both the employee and the business.
Bonus Points If You Have:
  • A master's degree or HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP/SCP, etc.
  • Experience supporting global teams or managing international contractor compliance
  • Previous experience scaling or revamping an HR function at a small company
  • A personal connection to fitness, martial arts, children's well-being, or empowering small businesses to make an impact on their communities
