Position Summary

At the Indianapolis Jewish Community Center, we recognize that our staff are our most important asset. The Human Resources Manager will serve as a key member of the JCC's leadership, supporting the Executive Team in crafting policies and procedures; ensuring compliance with all state and federal guidelines and regulations; ensuring a thriving staff culture; and providing strategy for retaining and recruiting the best talent.

Reporting to the CFO, the Human Resources Manager is responsible for the management and oversight of Human Resources functions under the umbrella of recruitment, training, policies and procedures, and compliance. The Human Resources Manager is professional, confidential, impartial, and a listening ear for all employees. This person understands that a Human Resources professional represents the agency, as well as the employees that work for it. This role requires a solution-oriented, meticulous, positive individual who is ready contribute to the continued success and future growth of the Indianapolis JCC.

Primary Responsibilities & Duties

Culture & Coaching
  • Partners with the leadership team to understand and assist with execution of the organization's human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, performance and compensation management and succession planning.
  • Works with leadership team to ensure a vibrant staff community and culture, where the staff feel connected to one another, the community and JCC's mission.
  • Leads employee engagement and appreciation efforts.
  • Supports supervisors in coaching direct reports and growing their skillsets and provide coaching directly to those direct reports, as needed.

Recruitment & Onboarding
  • Implements fair employment practices in compliance with all state and federal laws and which meet the needs of the organization and supports all DEI goals and objectives.
  • Manages employee lifecycle milestones and processes including but not limited to recruitment, onboarding, annual review process, training and development and offboarding (including conducting exit interviews).
  • Supports the maintenance of the HRIS system (ADP) and expands system capabilities in the areas of recruitment, onboarding, benefits, employee files, performance and compensation and performance management.

Training & Compliance
  • Monitors and ensures the organization's full organizational compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations (including but not limited to EEO, ADA, FLSA, FMLA, OSHA, etc.).
  • Provides support and guidance to management team and other staff when complex, specialized and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing reasonable and/or religious accommodations, investigating allegations of wrongdoing (including harassment) and employment terminations.
  • Investigates reports of possible EEO violations immediately, recommends corrective action as needed and follows up appropriately with parties involved.
  • Oversees employee disciplinary meetings, terminations and investigations.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes in human resources, talent management and employment law.
  • Collaborates with other department managers to deliver employee training with a focus on ensuring adherence to Federal, State and local regulations, enhancing performance management, and complying with JCC policies and procedures.
  • Works with department managers to ensure job descriptions are up-to-date and compliant with regulatory requirements and accurately reflect the duties assigned to the position and competencies required to effectively perform the duties.
  • Works with supervisors to identify skills gaps and appropriate training to close gaps.

Required Competencies
  • Communications: Excellent verbal and written communication, in addition to strength in analytical, organizational, interpersonal, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to meet deadlines along with the ability to prioritize tasks and delegate them when appropriate.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees.
  • Proven ability to always act with integrity, professionalism and confidentiality and maintain objectivity in difficult employment situations.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization's HRIS system.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment with additional hours/weekends, as needed.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development or related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in Human Resources that includes life cycle management of employees.
  • SHRM-CP is highly desirable.
  • Experience in staff supervision is a plus.


Work Environment

Work is predominantly performed in an office setting and includes prolonged periods of computer and desk work (which can completed from both sitting and standing positions). The incumbent will be required to access and navigate throughout the building and grounds. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 25 pounds.
