The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/continuous basis for the Civil Service examination process for INDUSTRIAL WASTE INSPECTOR in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT.

About the Job:

As an Industrial Waste Inspector, you will Independently investigate new and existing businesses to determine their industrial user classification, determine compliance with applicable regulations, and assist businesses with compliance. Develop and issue discharge permits for designated Industrial Users. Conduct preliminary and compliance inspections, and perform sampling and compliance monitoring as required.

Individuals in this classification are expected to possess in-depth knowledge of industrial pretreatment processes necessary to prevent pollution. Inspectors must operate from only general policies and procedures, and determine their own practices and procedures when encountering unique and unprecedented situations. Errors in judgment or performance by incumbents would significantly impact areas of health and safety, legal matters, public relations, environmental issues, and could cause damage to expensive equipment or infrastructure. Inspectors may be expected to lead crews involved in performing sampling and data collection activities, and to provide training as required.

Employees in this classification work under general direction and are responsible for assuring the technical correctness of their own work. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written directions. The work is evaluated by reports and inspections, by adherence to quality and safety standards, and other established performance criteria.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • A combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Typical ways to obtain those would be successful completion of a two-year curriculum including course work in engineering, industrial or environmental technology, physical or biological science, industrial hygiene, or related fields AND at least two (2) years of experience in one of these areas. One (1) year of industrial pre-treatment involvement may substitute for the two-year (2-year) experience requirement. Three (3) years of experience in an Industrial Pretreatment program may substitute for course work and experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver license at the date of hire, and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License within 30 days of hire.

    EXAMINATION STEPS
    • There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
    • Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluated (weighted 30%).
    • Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral board interview (weighted 70%), oral boards will be tentatively scheduled once per month.
    • All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.

    IMPORTANT NOTES
    • A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
    • The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
    • Applicants claiming veterans' preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in

    The City of Everett provides a to eligible members consisting of the following:

    Benefits for the eligible employee and eligible dependents begins the first month following the employee's hire date (i.e. if hired in March, benefits start April 1st.) Premiums for Delta Dental and VSP Vision are paid by the City on behalf of the employee for single or family coverage. Premiums for HMA Medical and Kaiser Medical Coverage are shared by the employee. Premiums for Life, and Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage on behalf of the employee are paid by the City.

    An additional life insurance benefit is available through a Voluntary Life insurance program for the employee, spouse and children. The employee pays the premiums for this benefit.

    It is mandatory that both the City and the employee pay into the Department of Retirement Systems for Washington State.

    Three voluntary Deferred Compensation programs are available for employee participation.
    A Flexible Spending Plan is available that allows you to make pre-tax contributions for Health Care reimbursement and/or Dependent Care reimbursement for eligible expenses not covered by medical insurance.
