The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for the position of Inspector, Field Operations, West to join our team in Field Operations West team in the Regulatory Compliance (RC) branch. You will be responsible for a variety of compliance assurance activities including field inspections, incident response, licensee education activities, etc. As the successful candidate, you will also respond to incidents and stakeholder complaints with direction and guidance from leadership as necessary and will participate in the 24hr on-call rotation. The preferred candidate will have experience in Pipeline Operations and be based in Red Deer or surrounding area.
The AER ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of oil, oil sands, natural gas, and coal resources over their entire life cycle. Inspectors at the AER have the opportunity to represent the interests of all Albertans in ensuring regulatory compliance of the upstream Oil & Gas industry, and work with a variety of professionals to hone and develop their skills.

What your day-to-day will look like:
- Conduct and support inspections on operations/activities within the AER's jurisdiction. Prepare inspection plans and sampling equipment when necessary. Collect and analyze information from varied and numerous sources to determine compliance, resolve problems and make recommendations to improve environmental practices.
- Prepare letters and inspection reports. Perform follow up action as required or forward the non-compliance items for possible enforcement action to an investigator.
- Respond to incidents and stakeholder inquiries. Support the resolution of complaints between AER stakeholders.
- Respond to calls on the 24-hour emergency response line when on-call.
- Communicate and consult with industry regarding areas of concern.
- Support provincial teams as needed to develop proactive inspection programs and ensure the flow of information between provincial teams and field centre teams.
- Contribute to provincial initiatives or assignments related to operational needs, regulatory, and technical issues as appropriate. Contribute towards creating and maintaining a positive and collaborative working environment.
- Adhere to all safety procedures and policies.
What we're looking for in you:
- Diploma in engineering, environmental sciences or other related education is preferred.
- 6+ years related in regulatory, field operations, or other relevant experience. Experience in pipeline integrity and spill response are considered assets.
- Working knowledge of regulatory requirements, especially with regulations that relate to environmental compliance in the oil & gas industry in Alberta.
- Ability to prioritize work based on risk and value paired with excellent communication skills; written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and with a team.
Additional Information:
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
- Pre-placement Medical required. Ability to conduct typical Oil & Gas field work, including driving prolonged distances, climbing stairs, ladders, etc., walking around industrial sites in all conditions, walking into remote locations, and ability to work in all weather conditions.
- The following are required but can be obtained upon hire: Standard First Aid, H2S Alive, ICS 200.
- Applicants must possess a fully valid driver's license along with a positive driving record. The word "fully" describes the criteria for a class 5 as opposed to a graduated license, and "positive driving record" as defined in the AER driving policy.
- Minimal required travel of 3-4 days per year.
- Approximately 50% field work and 50% office work.
- Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
