Role and Facility Information

The Division of Infectious Disease of Island Health seeks energetic and dedicated Infectious Disease Consultants to join their team of four in Nanaimo.

The ID Service at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) is a hospital-based pro gramme, providing a comprehensive array of Infectious Diseases management and integrated services to the hospital and broader community of Nanaimo and district and the facilities and communities of Central/North Vancouver Island (VI) north of Duncan. We are a growing division and program with a vision of expansion to at least six physicians.

On call service requirements include consultation and case management for a broad array of infectious disease cases at NRGH and consultative services to other facilities and the medical communities of Central/North VI. Other on site specialties at NRGH include surgical specialties, medical specialties, ICU, dialysis unit, physiatry, obstetrical services, and the busiest Emergency Department on VI, with a stated plan to develop further tertiary services.

A very active Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Programme (OPAP) is based at NRGH, with support through facilities in Comox, Campbell River and Port Alberni of OPAP services elsewhere in Central and North Vancouver Island. The ID service also provides coverage of a short-term Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) Clinic currently run through Medical Day Care at NRGH.

There is an excellent medical microbiology and laboratory team based in Victoria and a nascent Island wide Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

Options for outpatient consultation and follow-up in the community include a hospital-based clinic and support for management of OPAP, HIV and Hepatitis Program patients. Outpatient clinic work and on-site consultative service in North Island facilities (Comox Valley and Campbell River Hospitals) is provided on a weekly basis with the hope of expanding such coverage to other facilities in the Central Island (Oceanside Urgent Care Centre and West Coast General Hospital).

Affiliation with the University of British Columbia and the Island Medical Program provides the opportunity to teach medical students and residents. Opportunities for hospital-based clinical research and/or quality improvement initiatives are also available.

Applicants should have experience in acute care consultation and management of adult infectious diseases in a tertiary hospital setting and an interest in supporting the development of the ID Service for Central/North Vancouver Island based in Nanaimo. An interest in providing service on a remote and on-site (travelling clinic) basis to affiliated facilities in Central/North Vancouver Island is essential. Antibiotic stewardship expertise or other area of particular interest will also be considered an asset.
