Role and Facility Information
The Nanaimo site of the Vancouver Island Department of Renal Services has immediate need for a full-time locum to cover service gaps related to a leave of absence. We are initially offering a 6-month term with the possibility of extension or future recruitment to a permanent position.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority coordinates the delivery of health care to the approximately 800,000 residents of Vancouver Island and surrounding islands. Nanaimo boasts a full-service renal program. Facilities include an 18-station hospital-based in-centre hemodialysis unit, a Home Dialysis Clinic (peritoneal and hemodialysis), 3 community dialysis facilities, and a multi-disciplinary Central Island Kidney Care Clinic. Together these facilities support the care of approximately 250 dialysis patients and several thousand CKD patients living in the central and north island.
The Central Island Nephrology group is presently comprised of sevennephrologists working in Nanaimo. The service model involves a rotation acute inpatient service, hemodialysis unit coverage and outpatient clinic work, including CKD and Home dialysis clinics.
We are seeking an individual with training, skills and experience in all aspects of clinical nephrology - hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, pre- and post-transplant care, hypertension, and general clinical nephrology. The successful applicant will have FRCPC designations in Internal Medicine and have completed fellowship training in Nephrology. They will work with a group of hard-working, team-oriented and patient-focused renal care providers.
Start Date
As soon as possible

Nanaimo is an exciting urban community with a breathtaking waterfront. It provides an opportunity to enjoy an active lifestyle with a multitude of year-round recreational opportunities including golf, mountain biking and walking trails, kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing, or dive to explore three artificial reefs created by wrecks sunk in the harbour. Nanaimo is well-situate near downhill and cross-country skiing at Mount Washington, just 1.5 hours north as well as Tofino and the west coast trail to the west. This vibrant, growing city boasts its own symphony and theater, offers postsecondary education at the Vancouver Island University, is just 15 minutes by seaplane to downtown Vancouver and a short drive to Victoria.
