PRINCIPAL GENERAL SUMMARY: The responsibilities of this position are to provide educational and operational leadership at the building level; to plan, organize and evaluate staff and programs and services within building; and to promote communication with students, parents, staff and the community for educational effectiveness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To effectively perform the essential functions of any position with the District, regular attendance is required and expected. The assistant principal assists in the smooth functioning of programs and events at the direction of the building principal.
1. Provides positive leadership in creating a school environment conducive to teaching and learning which recognizes the needs and concerns of students and teachers; remains accessible during school hours to take action on any situation which may arise.
2. Provides educational and instructional leadership; implements district curriculum and procedures; supervises curricular and extra-curricular programs and manages their continuing review, evaluation and improvement; coordinates decision-making process with site-based management committee and district administrative staff.
3. Oversees building curriculum and administers curriculum review and improvement; evaluates educational results against district objectives, statutory requirements, and best professional practices.
4. Provides counseling and guidance to students; discusses student achievement and behaviors; encourages, motivates, coaches, corrects and disciplines students; communicates and confers with parents to promote student learning, success and appropriate behavior; communicates with outside agencies concerning students as necessary.
5. Administers student records; ensures evaluation of each student's educational growth and development; provides periodic reports to parents and other administrators.
6. Disciplines and directs the management of students in classroom, lunchroom, hallways, and on school grounds; holds students accountable for conduct, administers student attendance policies.
7. Assesses student emergency health and safety needs and ensures appropriate action.
8. Supervises and evaluates personnel assigned to the building; serves as mentor to building staff; observes and provides feedback regarding performance; trains and motivates staff; works with staff to resolve problems, implements collective bargaining agreements and responds appropriately to employee grievances. Recommends the appointment, assignment, promotion, transfer, probation or dismissal of certificated and classified staff at the building.
9. Manages the maintenance and use of the physical plant to facilitate the educational program; supervises the operation of care of the school building, grounds and other school property; monitors safety; reports unsafe conditions for repair; responds to emergency situations.
10. Administers the building and Associated Student Body (ASB) budgets; approves and monitors expenditures; plans, develops, recommends and implements budget to maintain and improve the building instructional program.
11. Establishes and maintains effective communications with patrons and the public regarding school programs and services; communicates community concerns to the Superintendent as appropriate; leads and secures parental and public involvement and support; establishes and maintains effective community relations; participates in parent groups; attends school board meetings as requested.
12. Implements and enforces state and district curriculum, policies and procedures, taking into consideration individual differences among students; serves on a variety of district-wide committees; coordinates special projects as requested.
13. Ensures the maintenance of a wide variety of records; prepares and presents a variety of reports as required.
14. Demonstrates and maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of the research, theories and trends of effective learning, educational law, supervision and other matters related to building level education; attends a variety of meetings, seminars, workshops and courses to enhance professional development.
15. Meet and confer with other district administrators to facilitate smooth transitions between programs and levels.
16. Serves as member of instructional and administrative teams of the District; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exposure to diseases carried by students; exposure to student noise levels; requires being accessible during off-hours to return to work for emergencies; requires attending meetings, activities and events after normal work hours; occasional prolonged exposure to visual display terminal; occasional prolonged sitting for long periods; occasional lifting, restraining, or controlling students; occasional exposure to danger from out-of-control individuals; must be mobile to move throughout the school building and grounds; constant lifting/carrying objects weighing 0-10 pounds, occasional lifting of 11-24 pounds, and rarely lifting 25-50 pounds, may rarely be required to lift students in an emergency situation; employee works inside approximately 85 percent of the time and outside approximately 15 percent of the time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience - Master's degree in education or related field and valid principal's certification with building level emphasis, and three years of successful teaching experience.Allowable Substitutions - None.
