Legal Advisor to the Commission
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $155,000 - $173,000
Starting Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience
The State Corporation Commission ("Commission" and "SCC") seeks a Legal Advisor to support one of our three Commissioners. This Legal Advisor will assist the Commissioner by reviewing and organizing testimony, cases, and opinions and by performing special project assignments. The selected candidate for this position will conduct assigned legal research and analysis, prepare written reports, meet with the Commissioner and staff on program matters, and prepare position and/or opinion papers on policy. The Commissioner's Legal Advisor will serve as a liaison with external parties to obtain required case-related facts and information, exchange documents, and plan and organize meetings. Additional responsibilities of the selected candidate will include reviewing, summarizing, and analyzing testimony and other documents for cases; indexing and organizing cases and opinions; coordinating activities of the office with SCC Division Directors, Hearing Examiners, and the Office of General Counsel; and performing related work as requested. This position provides opportunities for some telework.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications for this position include considerable professional experience in regulatory and administrative law, a law degree from an accredited law school, and admission to the Virginia State Bar . The ideal candidate for this position will have considerable knowledge of the techniques used to research statutes and resolutions, the ability to analyze complex information and communicate effectively to facilitate decision-making, and the ability to write well documented yet concise reports. The selected candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both in and outside of the Commission. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing with the ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.
