Manager of Examinations

Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $95,300 - $120,000

Starting Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience

The State Corporation Commission (SCC or Commission) seeks a Manager of Examinations to join our Bureau of Financial Institutions (BFI). The SCC's BFI regulates depository financial institutions such as Virginia-chartered banks and related holding companies, savings institutions and related holding companies, and credit unions.

The job responsibilities of this position will include the following:
  • Planning, organizing, and directing examinations and the work of examiners for an assigned portfolio of banks;
  • Monitoring the financial condition and performance of a portfolio of banks and monitoring developments in financial markets and industry trends relative to supervised financial institutions;
  • Reviewing and editing reports of examinations;
  • Preparing written recommendations and related documentation for regulatory action;
  • Corresponding and communicating with BFI staff and other state and federal agencies regarding regulatory requirements, issues, joint or multi-state examinations, and other matters;
  • Participating in the recruitment of bank examiners;
  • Recommending, developing, implementing, and updating examination policies, procedures, and reports as needed;
  • Managing, coaching, developing, training, and evaluating staff; and
  • Performing related work as required.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications for this position include considerable professional experience in the regulation of financial institutions, experience leading and managing professional staff, and a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or a related field. Some experience or educational background in auditing or risk management is preferred. Some experience with model risk programs is also preferred. A degree from the Graduate School of Banking is preferred but not required. Thorough knowledge of the operations and responsibilities of financial institutions and applicable state and federal laws and regulations is advantageous.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to: delegate responsibility and review results to ensure deliverables are met; make quality and timely decisions; drive organizational change initiatives; and maintain effective working relationships with SCC staff, industry personnel, the Virginia Legislature, other state and federal regulators, and the general public. Applicants must have the ability to lead, manage, train, coach, motivate, and develop professional staff. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
