General Purpose
This at-will position, under general direction, performs various routine to complex professional legal services and provides assistance and advice to Superior Court of California, County of Imperial Judges and the Court related to both civil and criminal cases; conducts legal research and provides legal consultation for Court judicial officers and staff; reviews court documents and filings for compliance with legal mandates; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey level professional attorney classification responsible for performing legal research, preparing tentative decisions and rulings and assisting judges in researching and resolving legal questions.
The Judicial Staff Attorney III is distinguished from the Judicial Staff Attorney II, in that incumbents at the higher level perform a wider range of highly complex and sensitive research in an expeditious manner. The incumbent is expected to be experienced working independently in performing legal research and drafting legal opinions for judicial and executive staff and must be able to respond within short timeframes.

Minimum Qualifications; Licenses; Special Requirements
Training and Experience:
Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law; and six (6) years of increasingly responsible practice of law in either civil and/or criminal legal practice, and/or professional level legal research experience in support of the judicial branch.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid Class C driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Court's vehicle insurance policy.
Current active membership and good standing with the State Bar of California.

Pay Practices
This is an exempt salaried position with biweekly paydays. Medicare is paid at a rate of 1.45% by both, Court and Employee.
Leave Provisions
Sick leave is accrued at a rate of .0500 per hour worked based on max of 80 hours per pay period. Max amount accrued per pay period is 4 hours per pay period.
Vacation time is accrued based on years of service capped at 320 hours:
Military leave is 30 days per year.
Bereavement leave is available.
Benefits
Health Insurance is available at a shared cost. The Court will subsidize a percentage of the medical premium and employee is responsible for the rest. The percentage subsidized by the Court depends on coverage plan chosen. Coverage is also available for registered domestic partners and eligible dependents at employee's expense.
Vision and Dental Insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents at the employee's expense.
Basic life Insurance of $20,000.00 is paid by the Court. Optional Supplemental Life and
Dependent Insurance is available at the employee's expense.
Long Term Disability Insurance is paid by the Court.
Worker's Compensation is paid by the Court.
State Disability Insurance is paid by employee at 1% rate up to $101,636 in wages.
Deferred Compensation (457(b) Plan) is available at the employee's expense.
Employee Assistance Program is paid by the Court.
Tuition Reimbursement up to $1,200 per calendar year subject to pre-approval and availability of funds.

- 180 months to 240 (15 to 20 years) accrual rate is at .080760 per hour worked an equivalent to 21 days per year
- Over 240 months (20 years +) accrual rate is at .088460 per hour worked an equivalent to 23 days per year. This bracket is capped off at 320 hours.
