Job Summary: Reporting to the Performance Manager, the Kiln Coach owns the mission for continuous improvement on the kiln and is responsible for meeting monthly and annual production targets for clinker and TSR% (Thermal Substitution Rate). The kiln coach monitors plant operations and performance closely and identifies opportunities for improvement and works with the rest of the Harleyville team to implement effective solutions. A core function of the position is the training of new control room operators as well as the long term development and improvement of all the Unionized control room operators. This includes mastering the Advanced Process Control "Expert" Automation system and developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures for improved stability and reliability. As the primary interface with the Control Room Operators, the Kiln Coach also gets involved where appropriate troubleshooting and implementing process improvements on other plant systems such as Raw Mill, Coal Mill and Finish Mills. When required, the Kiln Coach will act as a Relief Production Supervisor working 12 hour shifts, nights and/or days including weekends, leading the Production Shift personnel operating the Raw Mill, Kiln/Cooler, Coal Mill and Finish Mills.
Nature and Scope:
I. Safety Compliance:
Regulations: Understand and comply with MSHA, local, and plant safety regulations. Hazard Management: Identify and correct safety hazards, participate in safety training, and ensure compliance. Inspections: Cooperate with external inspectors. Safety Enforcement: Take immediate corrective, preventive, and/or disciplinary actions when detecting or being informed about any deviation from GCC safety standards by internal personnel or contractors.
II. Training and Development:
Mentorship: Train and mentor new Control Room Operators across all plant operations. Documentation: Document performance incidents and participate in coaching/discipline meetings. SOPs: Develop and monitor adherence to standard operating procedures.
III. Operations Support:
Strategic Work: Identify and communicate strategic work to improve overall plant performance. Technical Assistance: Provide troubleshooting support for plant operations. Performance Monitoring: Manage plant power forecasting and communicate performance feedback. Automation Interface: Act as the primary interface between the plant automation team and control room operators, ensuring programming/display issues are prioritized and addressed. Control Room Needs: Ensure all automation and instrumentation needs are met, acting as a liaison with maintenance. Meetings: Participate in daily operations meetings and present reviews and action items. Present a comprehensive review of kiln operation since the last meeting with respect to clinker production and alternate fuels and present action items for the short, medium and long term.
IV. Commissioning and Implementation:
Participate in improvement projects and assist in commissioning new equipment and technologies.
V. Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma. Post secondary education in a technical field preferred.
Knowledge/Ability:
5 years experience in cement manufacturing including detailed knowledge operating modern precalciner rotary kilns. Coaching and mentoring skills. Familiarity with Avantechnia Advanced Process Control Software. Experience as a production front-line supervisor. Knowledge of safety rules and cement production processes. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and SAP. Strong organizational and conflict resolution skills. Effective communication skills. Willingness to work off-shift hours and weekends. Ability to adapt to change.
