Position Title: Laboratory Manager - Hazardous Waste Facility

Plant location: Attalla, AL

About the Role:

Giant Resource Recovery is seeking an onsite Laboratory Manager for its Attalla Alabama location. This role reports to the Plant Manager. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing laboratory operations at the hazardous waste facility, ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations and company policy adherence. This role involves managing laboratory personnel, ensuring accurate sampling and analysis of hazardous materials, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Laboratory Manager will also develop and implement quality control procedures and support plant operations through technical expertise in hazardous waste characterization.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee daily laboratory operations, including sample collection, analysis, and data reporting.
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including EPA, OSHA, and DOT guidelines.
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure safe and efficient lab operations.
• Manage laboratory staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper calibration and maintenance schedules.
• Perform hazardous waste characterization and analysis to determine proper handling and disposal methods.
• Maintain accurate, complete and organized records of laboratory analyses and ensure timely reporting to regulatory agencies and management.
• Develop and manage budgets, ensuring cost-effective laboratory operations while maintaining regulatory compliance.
• Acts as a liaison with regulatory agencies and ensure all required permits, records, and reports are maintained and submitted as necessary. This includes maintaining records for the RCRA Permit in the Operating Record of the facility.
• Implement emergency response procedures and ensure lab staff are trained for potential hazardous incidents.
• Collaborate with plant management to support operational goals and strategic initiatives through laboratory analysis.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
• Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in laboratory management within hazardous waste or a related industry.
• Strong knowledge of hazardous waste regulations (RCRA, DOT, TSCA, etc.).
• Experience in laboratory operations, including sample analysis, quality control, and personnel management.
• Proven leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations and implement safety protocols effectively.
• Proficiency in using laboratory management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Being a self-starter, planner and the ability to solve problems with effective leadership are essential qualifications.

Work Environment:

• Exposure to hazardous materials, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols.
• Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.
• Work may involve standing, walking, and working with chemicals and hazardous substances in a laboratory setting.
