Description:

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Lab Manager to support both the Biology and Chemistry teams by ensuring a safe, efficient, and well-organized working environment. The Lab Manager will oversee all laboratory activities, including inventory management, shipping, packaging, and maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards. In addition, the Lab Manager will provide mentorship and guidance to junior operational staff and collaborate closely with various internal and external stakeholders to facilitate smooth day-to-day lab operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Laboratory Operations Management:
    • Oversee laboratory activities, ensuring safe, clean and efficient operations.
    • Manage and coordinate R&D packaging, shipping, and lab deliveries, ensuring all materials are properly handled.
    • Supervise the daily inventory management, ordering, receiving, stocking, and reconciliation of lab materials, reagents, consumables, and equipment.
  • Inventory and Stockroom Oversight:
    • Oversee laboratory stock rooms and inventory systems, ensuring accurate tracking of all laboratory materials.
    • Maintain and update lab databases (consumables, chemicals, and equipment inventories), coordinating with operational lab support as needed.
    • Ensure timely purchase of reagents, consumables, materials, and equipment, and manage open purchase orders.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable SOPs, safety guidelines, and environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations.
    • Coordinate and monitor waste disposal activities, including chemistry and biological waste and DOT signature compliance.
    • Schedule and oversee laboratory personnel training, partnering with Safety Partners to ensure adherence to good lab practices.
    • Perform weekly safety inspections on safety showers, eye washes, and fire extinguishers to ensure readiness.
  • Team Leadership and Support:
    • Mentor and guide junior operational staff, providing training and development opportunities in areas such as R&D packaging, shipping, and lab deliveries.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day laboratory site operations, collaborating closely with research scientists to ensure optimal lab functionality.
  • Equipment and Maintenance Coordination:
    • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and service of laboratory equipment, coordinating with vendors, service technicians and IT.
    • Act as the liaison between equipment owners and service technicians, scheduling preventive maintenance (PMs), hosting technician visits, and ensuring timely renewal of service contracts.
  • Collaboration and Cross-Functional Support:
    • Collaborate with Chemical and Biological Safety Officers to maintain safe working conditions and ensure adherence to EHS guidelines.
    • Coordinate with internal teams such as Facilities, EHS, IT, Project Management, and Legal to ensure smooth lab operations.
    • Actively contribute to operational projects such as laboratory moves, buildouts, and other improvements.
  • External Vendor and Contractor Interaction:
    • Manage and coordinate interactions with external vendors and contractors (plumbers, electricians, fire department, etc.) to ensure timely resolution of maintenance and operational needs.
  • General Lab Organization:
    • Maintain general laboratory organization, cleanliness, and compliance with organizational and safety standards.
    • Oversee the maintenance of software licenses required by lab team members, working closely with administrative support as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field; advanced degrees preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory management, with a strong understanding of both biology and chemistry lab environments.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience in mentoring and training staff.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory safety, compliance, and EHS guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and departments.
  • Familiarity with laboratory inventory management systems and procurement processes.
  • Experience with laboratory equipment, maintenance, and service coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry materials up to 30 pounds.
  • Comfortable working with laboratory equipment, reagents, and chemicals in a laboratory setting.

Work Environment:
  • This position will be based in a laboratory setting and may require standing, walking, or handling materials for extended periods.
