Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist
Profession: Lab MLS/MT

Hours per Shift: 9 hours
Experience: One year of full-time clinical laboratory experience
License: Medical Laboratory Scientist (AMT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT) or Medical Technologist (ASCP)
Certifications: Completion of a Medical Sciences program
Must-Have: Proficiency in automated equipment, chemistry, microbiology, hematology, and clinical laboratory experience
Description:
Medical Laboratory Scientists utilize cutting-edge technology to perform and evaluate complex chemical, biological, and microscopic analyses.
They collaborate with caregivers to provide critical information needed for excellent patient care.
There are opportunities for personal and professional growth, including a professional career ladder and participation in different committees.
They perform testing in the clinical laboratory for disease treatment and diagnosis using standard techniques and equipment.
Additional duties include storing and labeling specimens and preparing specimens for analytical tests.
Testing is performed accurately, safely, and within established time periods for routine, urgent, and stat testing.
Laboratory equipment and instrumentation are calibrated and maintained according to laboratory protocols.
Laboratory supply inventory is maintained.
Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures are performed to maintain compliance with regulations and protocols, evaluating acceptability as associated with department testing.
Communication with internal and external customers is conducted in an accurate, timely, effective, and professional manner.
Problems requiring additional troubleshooting are recognized, and assistance is sought as appropriate.
Participation in all accreditation and proficiency testing and annual performance competencies is required.
Information obtained from external sources is shared with co-workers.
Training is provided to students and new staff in the assigned section.
Assistance with writing, evaluating, revising, and implementing policies and procedures is provided.
Continuing Education is completed as required by Lab policy and to maintain certification if applicable.
Familiarity with laboratory and organizational policies and procedures is maintained, with reviews as required.
All requirements for MLS level II as outlined in the Professional Laboratory Advancement Program are completed.
The environment is fast-paced and high-volume.
Testing is performed in the Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, and Microbiology sections, including specimen processing.
Manual and automated equipment is used for analytical tests including but not limited to: Manual WBC and body fluid differentials, manual body fluid cell counts, specimen dilutions, gram stains, molecular assays, and antibody identification and titers.
Appropriate staff members are notified of any calibration or equipment failures which cannot be immediately resolved.
Laboratory supply inventory is maintained, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are below established par levels.
Values outside acceptable ranges that cannot be resolved are reported to the appropriate staff.
Testing result or instrument function problems are recognized and troubleshooting is performed or additional assistance is sought as appropriate.
