GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, under the Attorney General's Office, seeks qualified applicants for an Advanced Training Supervisor. This position is responsible for planning, scheduling, coordinating, and evaluating the continuing education and advanced law enforcement courses. This position prepares training materials and develops curriculum, as well as makes recommendations for new budgets and evaluates and monitors expenditures concerning advanced and basic training. To provide cross-training and overall program knowledge, the advanced training supervisor is subject to reassignment (switching) between the two positions.

The Advanced Training Supervisor position supervises advanced and specialized training and continuing education courses, including all campus/regional/distance learning delivery methods, office section operational logistics, and facility use by outside agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Implements and oversees advanced training and continuing education courses.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and suggest recommendations for the work performance of the instructional staff.
  • Responsible for the employee productivity of the Instructors.
  • Responsible for employee morale.
  • Communicates, enforces, and re-enforces the training policies and procedures, and exercises limited disciplinary powers as directed.
  • Acts as a liaison between management and instructors, ensuring open communication.
  • Conducts performance evaluations.
  • Monitors the day-to-day activities associated with the timely and effective delivery of the mandated coursework and advanced or specialized training to ensure that training correlates with agency's objectives.
  • Supervises and monitors guest instructors' lessons, location, behavior, dress, and class schedule.
  • Monitors students' unique needs (i.e., medical releases, special diets, etc.).
  • Monitors instructors' workload and encourages multi-tasking skills.
  • Responsible for dealing with student problems.
  • Instructs personnel utilizing appropriate methods and materials to meet the established instructional objectives.
  • Develops policies and administrative procedures related to the operation of a training program.
  • Evaluate each instructor's compliance with established instructional objectives.
  • Receives expenditure requests from instructional staff in their areas of responsibility and assignment; ensures that expenditures do not exceed available funds.
  • Responsible for the development and oversight of a budget.
  • Manages WLEA's Distance Learning Program.


Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of Federal and Wyoming statutes applicable to law enforcement training methods, techniques, and practices.
  • Knowledge of effective techniques of instruction in adult learning principles.
  • Knowledge of Academy's mission, goals and policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Academy budget process.
  • Skill in instructional techniques, research, and development.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in training, lesson plans, and visual aid preparation.
  • Skill in interpersonal communications.
  • Skill in organization, planning, and time management.

  • Ability to drive and travel throughout the state.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class C Wyoming driver's license.
  • Ability to work with standard office technology, computers, and communications systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Education)

Experience:

1-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Law Enforcement Academy Instructor with at least two years of law enforcement experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

P.O.S.T. Certification
OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Law Enforcement Academy Instructor with at least five years of law enforcement experience.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Exempt
  • Successful applicants are required to pass a background investigation.
  • The agency requires that employees successfully pass an annual competency test for use of force, a quarterly competency test for firearms, and a semi-annual physical fitness test.
  • Agency requires that employees have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class C Wyoming driver's license, as statewide travel is required.
