We are looking for forward thinking technologists that can accelerate our focus areas such as building stronger foundational technology capabilities, reducing complexity, employing digital transformation concepts, and leveraging disruptive technology.

As a Lead Data Scientist at Smurfit Westrock, you will be part of a cross-functional team dedicated to building and delivering innovative products with high impact and visibility within the organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in operations research and a passion for applying analytical methods to real-world challenges. You will be responsible for collecting, organizing, analyzing, and then sharing insights gleaned from data. You will leverage advanced techniques, such as mathematical programming/optimization, machine learning, and statistical analysis, to develop solutions that help us operate more efficiently and cost-effectively. You will be expected to engage with our business partners to identify data-driven opportunities and develop corresponding prescriptive, predictive and generative models to solve business problems.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
  • Formulates and applies mathematical modeling and other optimization methods to develop and interpret information that assists the business with decision making, policy formulation and/or other management functions through solutions that save time, cost, or improve processes.
  • Handles a high-level of ambiguity by decomposing business objectives into technical solutions and develops develop solutions utilizing operations research methods
  • Analyzes large data sets and use programming languages such as Python, R to develop statistical and optimization models to drive business solutions.
  • Develops and implements operational models and algorithms to optimize processes and improve efficiency.
  • Setups and deploys models/solutions in a live/production environment.
  • Identify data needs and requirements for data collection, transformation and integration to support modeling needs.
  • Create and maintain accurate and detailed documentation of models and analysis.
  • Prepares technical reports, presentations, and status briefings to communicate status and results of analysis to stakeholders and senior leadership within Smurfit Westrock.
  • Stays current with advancements in operations research and apply new techniques and technologies to improve processes.
  • Stays current with trends in the industry and utilizes up-to-date technology (for example, HBase, MapReduce) and analytical skills to support their assigned project.
  • Acts as a mentor for associate and intermediate team members assisting in their career growth.


What you need to succeed:
  • PhD in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Math or related quantitative field.
  • 7+ years of experience in mathematical programming/optimization
  • Expertise in at least one statistics/data analysis package, such as Spark, Python or R.
  • Expertise in at least one programming language, such as Python or Java, etc.
  • Experience with deploying data science solutions in a live, production environment.
  • Solid coding practices including good design documentation, unit testing, and integration testing.
