Position Description:
The Environmental Superintendent will join the Barrick team at the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, South Dakota. The Environmental Superintendent is responsible for directing the Homestake Mine and Richmond Hill Mine environmental compliance programs and environmental management systems to meet performance requirements.
General responsibilities include administration of all programs and plans that may have an impact on the natural environment, such as water management, surface and groundwater quality monitoring programs, oversight of waste management, and others.
Responsibilities:
Oversee the permitting, compliance, and monitoring programs.
Coordinate and manage environmental projects and technical studies as required.
Represent Homestake at regulatory hearings and permit development meetings as directed by the Closure Manager.
Represent Homestake at local, state, and federal regulatory agencies and community meetings as directed by the Closure Manager.
Review and approve site, local, state, and federal reporting requirements as per the Homestake Obligations Registry.
Ensure all environmental policies and procedures are issued and implemented as required. Make recommendations to improve policies and procedures to reflect changes to the operations.
Enforce compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Ensure that accurate records and report data from all analyses and tests are produced in the prescribed timeframe. Make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results.
Ensure all environmental reports are submitted to regulatory agencies to meet permit and regulatory due dates.
Provide advice and assistance to management, employees, and contractors in the interpretation of company environmental systems, policies, and procedures.
Provide environmental personnel with coaching to ensure plans align with staffing needs.
Maintain site environmental budgets.
Complete weekly and monthly reports on time.
Ensure accident prevention practices are maintained.
Ensure all environmental hazards, near misses and incidents are reported and investigated according to relevant procedures and appropriate remedial actions are implemented promptly.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Mine Engineering or related technical field required
Five years environmental related experience required
Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with others required
Excellent leadership skills and ability to influence others required
Ability to direct environmental programs required
Ability to speak and present speeches in public, regulatory and other meetings required
Experience in an operating or closed mining setting involving surface operations preferred
Critical thinking skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with timely and cost-effective delivery required.
Previous experience interacting with regulatory agencies preferred
Understanding of applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations and permitting preferred
Ability to work independently or with a team with little or no direct supervision required
Practical knowledge of water chemistry, hydrology, and biology required
Strong computer skills required. Experience with Barrick systems preferred
Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills required
Exceptional organizational skills required

Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) is a joint venture between Barrick (61.5%) and Newmont (38.5%) that combined our significant assets across Nevada in 2019 to create the single largest gold-producing complex in the world.
