The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is looking for an experienced and dedicated professional to lead the Microbiology department. This role offers the opportunity to provide administrative leadership, recommend innovative instrumentation and methodologies, and oversee workload coordination, staffing, and technical operations. Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.
The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have (A) at least five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or academic research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or medical laboratory technology or equivalent scientific field, of which (B) at least one (1) year must be in a supervisory or leadership capacity, or (C), any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.
Based on assignment, applicants must meet related Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements for High Complexity Testing.
Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.
Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, biology or medical laboratory technology, or related scientific field, may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.
II. A Master's degree with a major in microbiology, molecular microbiology, biology or medical laboratory technology or equivalent scientific field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience.
III. A Doctoral degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, medical technology or related scientific field, may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience.
S alary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range

- Will be required to work every 4th weekend and holiday rotations. (7am-3pm; 3pm-11pm; 11pm-7am; Sat/Sun., and or Holidays as deemed necessary by the Laboratory Supervisor Lead or Lab Director.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Perform patient testing in Microbiology and other specialties (e.g., Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology/Coagulation, Transfusion Medicine) using advanced laboratory equipment.
- Develop and recommend procedures for specimen collection and analysis; provide in-service training to medical staff on updates.
- Coordinate with reference laboratories on sample handling, test validation, and new procedures.
- Prepare reagents, controls, and calibrators; maintain and inspect laboratory equipment, performing minor repairs as needed.
- Review and update procedural manuals and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Train and assess staff competency, document performance evaluations and proficiency testing.
- Advise medical staff on appropriate tests and interpret results to enhance patient care.
- Monitor quality control, maintain records, and ensure adequate inventory of reagents and consumables.
- Attend hospital and professional development meetings to stay current with advancements in laboratory medicine.
- Collaborate with Infection Control on antibiograms and safety measures.
- Assist in bone marrow procedures and other tasks assigned by the Lab Director.
- Flexible working varied shifts, weekends, holidays, or on-call as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Expertise in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Blood Bank, including infection control, quality assurance, instrumentation, and federal/state regulations.
- Proficiency in specimen collection, handling, testing methodologies, and the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate specimen acceptability, interpret laboratory data, and make sound recommendations.
- Ability to write clear reports, deliver precise instructions, supervise staff, and foster collaborative work environments.
- Sound problem-solving skills, independence, and adaptability for varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory policies, safe handling of hazardous materials, and adherence to federal and state regulations.
- Organizational skills for maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, and managing assignments effectively.
- Ability to create and present concise technical and general reports, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy for software use in research, database management, and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong foundation in microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology concepts and theories.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques, including microbial culture, biochemical tests, serology, sequencing, and nucleic acid-based assays.
- Expertise in quality assurance practices, such as equipment maintenance, proficiency testing, method validation, and competency assessments in diagnostic settings.
- Ability to perform precise calculations, measurements, and unit conversions.
- Knowledge of professional ethics, conduct policies, and laboratory certifications or accreditation requirements.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing technical reports and delivering professional presentations.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively, following detailed instructions effectively.
- Competency in computer-based research, database management, and document preparation.
