This is a rare and extremely exciting opportunity to take a key role for CommTech which is earmarked for succession of our Chief Technology Officer (CTO) position. Short term you will benefit from the unique opportunity to shadow and learn first-hand from the current CTO gaining experience on our key products, projects, roadmap, market and customers.

This role will directly support, shadow and learn from our current CTO opening the door to decades of knowledge and experience. When taking this role you will be preparing and laying the foundations to become the successor for this critical leadership position. This is a vital role which forms part of our strategic succession plan, designed to ensure we build for the future whilst ensuring success for all involved.

As a Lead Solution/System Architect for SPX Communication Technologies (TCI | ECS) you will be responsible for system solutions on key customer projects whilst also being accountable for designing the architecture of roadmap products and new technologies. Your vision and technical knowledge will keep us a leading international supplier of spectrum monitoring, C-UAS, direction finding and communication intelligence (COMINT) capabilities which empower our customers to monitor, analyze and manage the RF Spectrum.

You will be technology focused with the ability to get involved in the detail as well as communicate to customers and other stakeholders. Experienced in distilling and communicating high level requirements into work packages for software, embedded, hardware and systems engineers ensuring that proposals and new product visions become a reality. This is a senior position that requires a driven individual in a fast-paced results orientated business.

This role will require you to spend time in our international office in Fremont, California and will also involve international travel.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
  • Learn from and support the current CTO, preparing and laying foundations for future succession.


  • Own and lead major Engineering KPIs as agreed by CTO and Director of Engineering.


  • Key engineering presence in the Fremont office supporting the CTO, Director of Engineering and Chief Engineer.


  • Supporting our CTO on customer visits for key opportunities and projects;
    • Travel to meet with key commercial and technical customer representatives.
    • Gather, understand and influence customer requirements.
    • Define system solutions to meet customer requirements.
    • Costing of proposed solutions.
    • Contribute to proposals and statements of work.


  • Realising proposed system solutions by collaborating with the wider Engineering design team;
    • Supporting the CTO and Director of Engineering to realize proposed system solutions.
    • Defining and communicating requirements or solutions to the different areas of engineering.
    • Technical review and design input for the software, embedded, hardware and system engineers.


  • Lead the architecture and design of roadmap products and new technologies;
    • Understand and implement the latest industry techniques
    • Support the creation of the company technology roadmap
    • Produce requirements for roadmap products
    • Lead design and system architecture for roadmap products
    • Support lower-level design for roadmap products
    • Support testing and QA for roadmap products
    • Key contributor in the full Engineering lifecycle (cradle to grave).


  • Ensure company technical problems are resolved creatively, independently and in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Competitive and market analysis. Evaluate and understand the products and offerings from leading companies in our marketplace
  • Conduct research to remain knowledgeable with regards to industry trends and emerging technologies in anticipation of new business process and products.


  • What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

    We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

    Required Experience
    • Experience in equivalent industries including but not limited to Spectrum Monitoring Systems, HFDF, tactical COMINT, RF Spectrum management or Electronic Warfare.
    • 10 + yrs experience in a software and hardware development.
    • 10+ yrs experience in low level and system design
    • Proven experience in technology planning, organization and development.
    • Experience applying technology solutions to business problems

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Knowledge of RF design and techniques.
    • Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and signal processing techniques.
    • Software Defined Radio and FPGA platform development experience.
    • Understanding of spectrum and cellular standards.
    • Knowledge of direction finding, Geolocation, Angle of Arrival, Time Difference of Arrival and hybrid systems.
    • Knowledge of the ITU and Spectrum Monitoring handbook


    Education & Certifications
    • PHD in relevant subject (advantage/preferred)
    • Degree qualification in an Engineering, Math's or Science subject or equivalent on job experience
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident

    Travel & Working Environment
    • Key leader and presence in the Fremont Office will require time in our Fremont, California office.
    • Hybrid working allowed.
    • International Travel will be required to support key customer and supplier meetings.

    Salary Information

    We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates. As required by law in this state, the quoted salary range for this position is $180,300 to $261,000 and represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect. We tailor our offers within the range based on organizational needs, internal equity, market data, geographic zone, and the selected candidate's experience, education, industry knowledge, location, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the selection process. At SPX, it is not common for individuals to be hired at the higher end of the range, and compensation decisions depend on a variety of factors. This position is eligible to participate in a discretionary bonus, subject to the rules governing the plan.
