Description
The Lead Systems Engineer for the AR/AI Simulation Facility at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU SOM) will play a critical hands-on role in the design, development, and maintenance of the facility's physical and virtual systems. Working closely with the Chief Systems Architect, the Lead
Systems Engineer will be responsible for building the technological infrastructure from the ground up, including the integration of augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This role will
focus on the practical implementation of technology, ensuring the facility operates efficiently and continuously evolves to stay at the cutting edge of medical training.
Examples of Duties
I. Administration/Infrastructure Development: 20%
A. Lead the setup and installation of both physical and virtual systems in the AR/AI
Simulation Facility.
B. Manage and coordinate with contractors, construction teams, and technology vendors to ensure the seamless integration of hardware and software.
C. Oversee the configuration and optimization of AR/AI systems and their connection to the facility's physical infrastructure.
ll. Service 55%
Technical operations and maintenance:
A. Oversee the technical operations of the facility, ensuring all systems function at peak efficiency.
B. Develop and implement protocols for system updates, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance.
C. Continuously monitor system performance, addressing any issues that arise promptly to minimize downtime.
Coding & AI Training:
D. Write and optimize code to support AR applications and AI-driven medical simulations.
E. Train and fine-tune specialized AIs for use in medical scenarios, ensuring their realistic interaction with students and staff.
F. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to integrate advanced AR/AI functionalities into the simulation programs.
lll. Research: 15%
A. Work closely with the Chief Systems Architect to push technological advancements and explore new opportunities for improving the facility's capabilities.
B. Stay informed on emerging trends in AR/AI technology and medical simulation, implementing new features and updates as appropriate.
C. Contribute to research initiatives to enhance the educational value of the simulations and maintain SIU SOM's leadership in medical training technology.
lV. Teaching: 10%
A. Assist in training medical students, faculty, and staff on the use of AR/AI systems, providing technical support and guidance as needed.
B. Work alongside academic and technical teams to develop training programs and ensure the systems are user-friendly and efficient for medical education.
Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
A. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
