Description:

PJI Law, PLC, a law firm headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, and a fast-growing Inc. 5000 business, is looking for a Legal Director to be part of our wonderful team and to help lead our rapid growth journey. This role requires an active bar license in any U.S. state, while a Virginia bar license or willingness to obtain it is preferred.

Our law firm exists to help those who wish to obtain legal protection and security for their families, sometimes in the wake of a personal, professional, or financial loss. Specifically, our firm focuses on providing legal services in the areas of estate planning, estate administration/probate, civil litigation, and business law, primarily in the Northern Virginia and Richmond markets.

An experienced, forward-thinking Legal Director is crucial to the pursuit of our mission of "ensuring that every person calling on us for help walks away with more peace of mind and a brighter future". Specifically, your role as Legal Director in our firm would include:
  • Management of Legal Team: Oversee our legal team of 20+ attorneys and 20+ legal support team members (and growing), including the hiring, onboarding, training, management, development, professional progress, accountability and evaluation of our legal team members.
  • Management of Legal Operations: Oversee the firm's legal production, operations, processes and activities while ensuring the legal department's competent and quality provision of legal services, client satisfaction goals, and overall profitability. Develop and maintain legal-related policies and procedures, closely monitor all relevant KPIs, continually identify opportunities for increased efficiency and technological improvements, grow the firm's legal training resources, and collaborate on improving sales performance as appropriate.
  • General Counsel Duties: Oversee the legal matters of the firm as a whole, ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, including ethics rules, and serve as the primary point of contact with the firm's various outside counsel as appropriate. Although these general counsel duties are important, they form only a minor part of the Legal Director's Role.
  • Strategic Planning: collaborate with the CEO and other firm leadership on legal department planning activities, including the development of the department's hiring plan and quarterly initiatives in support of the firm's annual goals.

While the above explains the role in a more traditional manner, it doesn't fully account for the type of organization we are. As a reference, as of each April since 2022, our firm has grown from a team of 18, to 38, 56, and now beyond 80 team members across different locations. Therefore, there are some specific traits that are required for this particular position. You can only be successful here if:
  • You are excited about leading and scaling our legal department and its 40+ person legal team in an organization that has on average, grown over 67% in each of the past three years and that intends to continue the trend.
  • You thrive on the opportunity to develop professionals, create career and growth opportunities for members of your team, and maintain an environment conducive to long-term retention of high performers.
  • You maintain high standards and expectations for services provided to clients and for client satisfaction outcomes.
  • You understand that profitability is essential to a business's health and sustainability, and are driven to achieve profitability-based benchmarks.
  • You closely track and monitor KPIs and use results to identify and implement improvements in the areas of accountability, productivity, and efficiency.
  • You regularly step out of the day-to-day to consider compliance and risk mitigation opportunities in order to maximize legal protection of your organization.
  • You are a hungry learner, and you are constantly working on your own growth and self-development, particularly in the areas of leadership and management.
  • You have a proven track record of having done all of the above in the course of your career, or at a minimum most of it to the extent allowed by your previous circumstances.

Our firm is a fantastic team environment. You will be working with other dedicated members of our team who work hard to get the job done right, who take pride in their work, and who support each other through thick and thin. In each 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 we earned the prestigious "Great Place to Work" certification, with an average of 95% of our employees over those four years praising our firm as a "great place to work" in an anonymous third-party survey.
