Job Title: Licensed Mental Health Counselor
Job Specialty: Psychiatry-Mental Health
Job Duration: 9 months
Shift: 8:00 AM-4:00 PM, 5x8 Hr
Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
Experience: Minimum of five years satisfactory full-time work experience providing direct counsel guidance, crisis intervention, or informational and referral services to inmates of a correctional facility, substance abuse, or a similar population.
License: LMHC License required
Certifications: None specified
Must-Have:
- Fluency in Spanish
- Strong organizational skills for collecting data and reporting on program performance
Job Description:
- Understand the roles of various stakeholders within the correctional setting, including vendors and defense organizations, while assessing the needs of the arrested individuals.
- Develop an understanding of the timeline and process from arrest to arraignment.
- Identify and communicate relevant healthcare information of arrestees in a timely manner to facilitate a smoother screening process.
- Establish rapport with stakeholders in central booking facilities, including police and corrections personnel.
- Coordinate with clinical staff, community treatment providers, and public defense agencies to identify clients appropriate for behavioral health intervention.
- Serve as a liaison between community providers and public defense agencies.
- When applicable, gather historical behavioral health information via the jail-based electronic health record (EHR).
- Preferably have 3-5 years of experience working within the criminal justice system or with programs serving the justice-involved population.
- Commitment to serving medically vulnerable populations is preferred.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice and public health systems in New York City, including the action plan of the Mayoral Task Force in Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice, is preferred.
- Established relationships with Legal Aid, New York County Defenders, and Neighborhood Defenders are preferred.
- Knowledge of alternative to detention programs is preferred.
- Must be able to perform clinical documentation, conduct clinical assessments, and provide mental health counseling.
