Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role

As part of the Battery Propulsion and Sustainability organization, the Senior Life Cycle Assessment Engineer will be responsible for driving activities in support of GM's decarbonization targets. GM has a goal of reducing scope 3 emissions.

The Senior Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Engineer plays a crucial role in driving activities in support of GM's scope 3 decarbonization goals through the application of lifecycle assessment methods and principles. This position requires a strong background in environmental science, engineering, or a related field, along with a thorough understanding of LCA methodologies and software. Your work will be a key part of GM's Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion vision.

What You'll Do
  • Perform comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) studies to assess the environmental and carbon impacts of products, processes, and services throughout their lifecycles.
  • Gather and analyze data related to materials, energy consumption, emissions, and other environmental factors.
  • Utilize LCA software tools such as SimaPro, GaBi/LCA for Experts, or OpenLCA to model and analyze lifecycle impacts.
  • Prepare detailed LCA reports, including data visualizations, to communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate LCA findings into the company's sustainability strategy and product development processes.
  • Ensure LCA practices comply with relevant standards (e.g., ISO 14040/44) and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for improving LCA processes and methodologies and contribute to the development of innovative approaches to enhance environmental performance and support claims.
  • Engage with internal Global Public Policy teams to address emerging regulations, taxes, and rating programs.
  • Engage with external partnerships, industry trade groups and suppliers in the application of life cycle assessment methodologies to evaluate materials and technologies to further GM's emissions reduction efforts.
  • Manage external reporting for LCA and PCF, including contributing to GM's annual public sustainability report, Security Exchange Commission (SEC) 10k filing, and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
  • Work closely with communications team to showcase GM's sustainability efforts, including speaking publicly about our team's work


Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Sustainability, Chemistry, or other related field
  • Minimum 2-5 years experience conducting lifecycle assessments
  • Proficiency in LCA software (SimaPro, GaBi/LCA for Experts, OpenLCA, etc.)
  • Strong analytical skills for data analysis, project management, and problem-solving
  • In-depth understanding of LCA methodologies, ISO 14040/44 standards and environmental impact assessment
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team environment
  • Ability to present complex information in a clear and engaging manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, analyze data in the context of business strategy and provide recommendations.


What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of LCA experience
  • Experience and knowledge of automotive design, engineering and manufacturing processes
  • Masters Degree or other advanced certifications
