The Board of Education announces an opening for a Literacy Specialist, Job Code 232, TS 522, Beginning Salary: $91,187.74. Bargaining Unit - None. This is a SERS Retirement position.

Position Summary: The Literacy Specialist will develop, implement and supervise programs to ensure
compliance with the state initiatives and regulations related to academic achievement related to literacy skills and fluent independent reading for Akron Public Schools' scholars.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.
  • Works with district leaders to review school performance results and student needs. Develops improvement strategies for identified gaps and deficiencies.
  • Assists with development and implementation of staff development programs and coaching strategies related to literacy programs and dyslexia screening tools and reporting.
  • Creates and maintains training resources for use across the District.
  • Assists with implementation of HB 436 (Dyslexia Screening) program mandates.
  • Prepares and analyzes data to determine effectiveness of literacy programs, instruction and intervention.
  • Develops and coordinates intervention strategies for identified students that may require additional literacy supports.
  • Assists with development and implementation of instructional practices, tools, and curriculum to support District literacy initiatives.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with state mandates related to literacy and early intervention identification and reporting. Ensures compliance with federal accountability measures where applicable.
  • Provides support with ELA curriculum alignment and development.
  • Engages with Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, State Support Team, and Educations Service Centers regarding specific training and professional development related to literacy.
  • Attends meetings and trainings to stay up to date on Ohio's Literacy initiatives.
  • Collaborates and supports the district literacy initiatives including 3GG, systematic explicit instruction, and high dosage tutoring.
  • Keeps current on evidence-based instructional strategies.
  • Uses technology as an instructional and management tool.
  • Provides program planning and evaluation.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or administrative role.
  • Five or more years of successful teaching experience with a background in literacy instruction.

Preferred:
  • Master's Degree in Education
  • Valid Ohio administrative certificate/license.
  • Experience in administrative role
  • In-depth Knowledge of Ohio's Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement
