Your Specific Responsibilities:
Performs highly advanced civil engineering work performing technical assignments related to road and bridge maintenance. Plans, coordinates, directs and provides technical assistance for highway maintenance activities. Responsible for ensuring that the highway system is maintained in accordance with established Maintenance Rating Program (MRP) standards. Performs work need surveys and develops a plan in the area of responsibility. Supervises and directs field crew supervisors in the planning, organizing, directing and controlling of routine maintenance programs. Drives a Florida Department of Transportation vehicle to perform these duties.
Conducts technical engineering evaluations, engineering studies, and quality control reviews to ensure roadway standards are met; this includes but is not limited to drainage, traffic services, vegetation/aesthetics, roadside, and roadway elements. Completes special engineering assignments to include investigation, report writing and other correspondence involving complex problems, employee suggestions and drainage analysis. Serves as a liaison with and consults with, providing technical advice to, engineers, supervisors, local government officials, other state agencies and private citizens regarding all maintenance matters, as directed. Responsible for the tactful handling of complaints either written or verbal.
Analyzes engineering specifications and design standards for design, construction, maintenance, and utility operations on the state highway system. Develops proposed quantities for maintenance contracts in the area of roadside and roadway maintenance. Reviews construction plans, attends construction project meetings and performs field reviews. Reviews and inspects construction projects to assure that they meet Department standards and maintenance performance measures.
Evaluates employees through established criteria and regular meetings. Ensures performance evaluations are processed promptly and correctly. Provides direction and ensures that all subordinates receive training and instruction in methods and techniques necessary to daily perform their assigned tasks. Ensures all paperwork, i.e. work schedules, timesheets, performance evaluations, training plans, daily crew reports, work orders, etc. are accurate complete and timely. Motivates employees to improve work quality and quantity as needed.
Purchases equipment, installs equipment, and pumps flood water that occurs due to storms.

This position requires a valid Class "E" driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years

- Perform engineering inspections and resolve problems using engineering solutions and techniques; plan, organize and coordinate diverse work assignments; communicate engineering information effectively both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; supervise employees in a variety of work assignments; monitor maintenance and construction projects to ensure compliance with standards, specifications, rules and regulations.
