At Heart Aerospace we develop the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric airplane with a capacity of 30 passengers, an electric zero-emission range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km. Heart is targeting type certification of the ES-30 by the end of the decade.
Our headquarters is based in Gothenburg, Sweden and we are now opening up a R&D hub in Los Angeles, which will focus on the advancement of Heart's hybrid-electric propulsion system and other key technologies.
Your mission
Heart Aerospace is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Manager, Battery Cell Engineering, to join our growing and dynamic team. In this role, you will be a key contributor to the development, testing, and optimization of advanced battery cells specifically designed for the demanding requirements of electric aerospace applications. You will leverage your deep understanding of electrochemistry, materials science, and battery cell design to drive innovation and ensure the highest levels of performance, safety and reliability.

You will initially report to the Director of Battery and belong to the Battery team. Your place of work will be at our office located in El Segundo, CA (Los Angeles).

You will leverage your deep understanding of electrochemistry, materials science, and battery cell design to drive innovation and ensure the highest levels of performance, safety and reliability.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead and mentor a team of battery cell engineers, providing technical guidance, performance feedback, and fostering professional growth.
- Define and drive the technical strategy for battery cell development, aligning with overall company goals and aerospace requirements.
- Oversee and manage battery cell development projects, ensuring they are on time, within budget, and meet performance targets.
- Provide expert guidance and oversight in the design, development, and optimization of lithium-ion battery cells for electric aerospace.
- Establish and oversee rigorous testing and validation strategies to ensure battery cell performance, safety, and reliability under demanding aerospace conditions.
- Foster strong collaboration with cross-functional teams (battery pack, systems, certification, supply chain) and effectively communicate technical progress and challenges to stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain a technology roadmap for battery cell advancements, including the evaluation of new materials, chemistries, and cell architectures.
- Ensure the team's adherence to the highest safety standards and compliance with relevant aerospace industry regulations (e.g., DO-311, UN 38.3).
- Manage relationships with external battery cell suppliers and collaborate with research institutions to advance battery technology.
- Manage team resources, including personnel, equipment, and budget, to effectively execute battery cell development initiatives.

You'll Bring These Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience in battery cell design, development, and testing.
- 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership or management role.
- Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery chemistry and electrochemistry.
- Experience with battery cell testing equipment and data analysis tools.
These Qualifications Would Be Nice to Have:
- Familiarity with aerospace industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with advanced battery technologies, battery modeling and simulation for aerospace applications.
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills in English
- Passion for aircraft and electrification of the aviation industry
Education
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a related field.
