Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director, Interuniversity, Sport, the incumbent is accountable for the day-to-day management of the inter-university men's basketball operations, including the planning, strategic development, coaching, recruiting, staffing, budget development and monitoring, marketing, evaluation and delivery of men's basketball operations at WLU. The incumbent is expected to serve as an effective spokesperson for the men's basketball program, promoting and enhancing the image of both the men's basketball program and the University, both on campus and off campus at a provincial and national level. In addition, the incumbent will be accountable for the planning and operation of fundraising initiative that include (but are not limited to camps, coaching clinics, golf tournaments, adopt a hawk, gala's etc), along with collaboration involving our Alumni, External Relations and Advancement Team, sponsors and other fundraising initiatives.
This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo campus. The incumbent provides leadership in a multi-campus environment, requiring regular interaction, communication and collaboration with staff and stakeholders at the Waterloo campus, Brantford campus, Provincial and National sport organizations, and external partners. The Manager will ensure the policies, programs and services are delivered equitably across all campuses and reflect the needs of all stakeholders.
Nature and Scope:
The Manager of Men's Basketball Operations and Head Coach will be accountable for the successful operation and strategic direction of the WLU men's basketball program. More specifically, the accountability of this position would currently include the hiring, discipline and performance management of one full time (WLUSA) assistant coach, part time assistant basketball coach(es) as well as part-time positions directly related to the basketball operation. Leading the team members as a positive role model, the position is also responsible for leading the interaction with 25 - 30 student-athlete members of the men's basketball team. During the "season", the men's basketball operation needs to be managed seven days a week including both training and competition.
Out-of season duties for the Manager of Men's Basketball Operations and Head Coach include accountability for a comprehensive recruiting system and strategy designed to attract top quality student-athletes. The incumbent will also be responsible for collaboration with the head Athletic Therapist and Coordinator, High performance Strength & Conditioning to plan and execute an effective off-season strength and conditioning program, and will be accountable, in consultation with the Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs and the Sr. Coordinator, Sport & Athlete Services, for providing the leadership and strategic direction of a successful student-athlete development program. The Manager will be accountable for motivating alumni to become involved in event fundraising and development activities and must meet annual fundraising targets. The Manager is accountable for developing and implementing a fundraising strategy in conjunction with the Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs, Associate Director, Development - Athletics & Wellness and the Director, Athletics and Recreation.

This is a Full-time, limited term position with a 5 Year mutual option for renewal. The normal hours of work are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Flexibility of working hours will be required to meet program needs which may arise outside of traditional work hours
Compensation
Level: 2B
Rate of pay: $81,888 to $102,360 annually
Broad salary ranges include a hiring range ($81,888 - $92,124 of range midpoint), a target range ($92,125 - $112,596 of range midpoint), and a premium range ($112,597 - $127,951 of range midpoint).
When new employees are hired the appropriate base salary is determined using these sub-ranges as a guide while adhering to rules on hiring as defined in our compensation policy. Considerations for new hire salaries include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.

Accountabilities
- Hires, disciplines and evaluates the performance of 1 full time (WLUSA) Assistant Coach
- Hires, disciplines and evaluates the performance of the men's basketball operation assistant coaches and staff (6-8 staff members annually);
- Accountable for the coordination and supervision of the inter-university men's basketball program so as to provide a quality, comprehensive, and successful program
- Accountable for the promotion of positive relations with alumni, as well as the WLU and Kitchener/Waterloo communities and local media
- Accountable for managing in conjunction with the Administrative Coordinator, all team travel and meal coordination in and out of season.
- Accountable for student-athlete development including recruiting, monitoring academic progress, which requires access to confidential academic records, guidance and retention;
- Disseminate and interpret the rules governing both the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U SPORTS;
- Ensures in consultation with the Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs and the Sr. Coordinator, Sport & Athlete Services, the athletic and academic eligibility of team members;
- Accountable for the management of all university funds budgeted for the men's basketball operation;
- Accountable for the management and compliance of the athletic financial awards budgeted for the men's basketball operation;
- Accountable for developing and implementing a fundraising strategy in conjunction with the Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs, Associate Director, Development - Athletics & Wellness and the Director, Athletics and Recreation.
- Accountable for the purchasing and maintenance of an up-to-date inventory of all equipment and uniforms, including regular inspections and repairs, and for health and safety within the men's basketball operation;
- Accountable for the establishment and maintenance of an effective student recruitment program which attracts top quality student-athletes.
- Represent Laurier as the coach expert on any provincial or national committees
Team Training and Special Event Coordination
- Accountable in conjunction with the head Athletic Therapist and Coordinator, High performance Strength & Conditioning for the performance of the Athletic Therapist/Strength and Conditioning Coach during the season to ensure development and implementation of a successful in-season strength program, maintenance program, injury assessment, rehabilitation and injury prevention program;
- Accountable in conjunction with the head Athletic Therapist and Coordinator, High performance Strength & Conditioning to manage an effective off-season strength and conditioning program as developed by the Strength and Conditioning Coach, which will promote individual improvement in quickness, size and strength;
- Manages and schedules all team practice and training camp schedule with the City of Waterloo
- Assists with the coordination/communication of recruiting events and game scouting including fundraising events such as the Golf Tournaments and Adopt a Hawk
- Carries out special projects as assigned by Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs and the Director, Athletics & Recreation
Athlete Recruitment & Student Athlete Development
- Leads student-athlete recruitment efforts through the scheduling and coordination of on campus visits with other academic units and student services within Laurier, while being in compliance with USports & OUA regulations
- In conjunction with the Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs, develop and implement services that appropriately support the student athlete development of the men's basketball program in the classroom and community, including: fundraising, student-athlete recruitment services; and student-athlete support services (academic, physical and mental well-being, and personal);
- Contacts up to 70 potential student athletes annually.
Qualifications
- University degree (post-graduate preferred)
- Five years of successful coaching experience an asset
- Experience with budget management
- Integrity - a role model for student-athletes, motivator, mentor
- Proven organizational, leadership and management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of the university environment and university athletic recruiting an asset
- Knowledge, Education and training as it relates to EDII and Sport
- Up to date Vulnerable Sector Check
- Up to date Safe Sport of Canada Training and Certification
- Awareness and acknowledgement of the NCCP Coaches of Canada Coach Code of Conduct
- Experience and understanding of coaching at the OUA and U Sports level
- Strong technical background and practical experience at a highly competitive level
- Level III NCCP certification
- Strong leadership and human resource management skills (experience with public sector unions is desirable)
- Ability to work effectively in a university environment (ability to work consultatively and collegially)
