Position Overview:

The Director of EMS Operations oversees daily operations of the UNC Health Appalachian Specialty Care Transport Program, reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer and Medical Director. Responsibilities include managing clinical standards, education, quality, and community relations. The role requires expertise in critical care transport, leadership, and strong interpersonal skills. The director ensures staff training and certifications meet or exceed standards, tracks quality data, and collaborates with medical directors to improve clinical outcomes. They also work closely with leadership to enhance clinical, operational, and financial results. The director fosters a compassionate, respectful environment and adheres to organizational policies, promoting a healthy work culture and excellent patient care.

Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $84,000.00 annually.

  • Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience - range is $84,000.00 annually or more (depending on education & experience). Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is a non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Experience: Drives improvements by identifying service gaps and implementing strategies to enhance patient perceptions and satisfaction, collaborating with leadership across departments.
  • Quality: Develops strategies to improve clinical outcomes, ensuring evidence-based practices and alignment with quality targets.
  • Operational Performance: Manages labor targets, productivity, and budget expenses to ensure effective patient care delivery. Implements process improvements to increase efficiency.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Ensures consistent care across services, fosters resource optimization, and drives staff engagement through effective leadership strategies.
  • Safety & Compliance: Upholds safety standards and regulatory compliance, including radiation protection and infection control, while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Other Responsibilities: Includes human resource management, fiscal oversight, and promoting strong medical staff relations, while ensuring compliance with regulations and continuous process improvement. Fosters a culture of safety and ensures adherence to North Carolina EMS rules.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or comparable combination of education and experience preferred. Master's degree required within two years of hire.

Experience
  • Five (5) years or more of nursing within a health system or hospital setting required. The ideal candidate will also have experience in EMS field operations. Demonstrated work experience required in leading a service line including but not limited to fiscal management, human capital management, strategic planning and development of service lines, overall operational management of multiple clinical areas, and regulatory compliance.

Required Registration/License/Certification
  • North Carolina EMT Basic required, Paramedic preferred
  • Unrestricted Nursing License
  • One advanced certification in nursing is required within two years of hire. These can include Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN); Critical care Registered Nurse (CCRN); Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN); or Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (CTRN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association required.
