About the Stepdown Unit:

Our Stepdown Unit at Scripps Mercy Chula Vista is a 34-bed facility focused on high-acuity patients, including those recovering from strokes, cardiac issues, and patients on critical drip protocols. This unit specializes in continuous cardiac monitoring for conditions such as myocardial infarction, chest pain, unstable angina, hypertension, diabetes, and renal failure. We prioritize creativity and flexibility to meet the diverse needs of our patient population. Providing care requires great empathy and understanding, especially for our underserved and uninsured patients, who have significant needs that demand innovative thinking and careful discharge planning. Our staff is highly engaged and supportive of one another, fostering a strong sense of teamwork. Team members assist each other proactively, creating a welcoming and warm environment.

Your responsibilities:
  • You will create and maintain an environment that assures nursing practice reflects established standards of care and practice and a culture that promotes patient safety.
  • Be responsible for the daily operations of assigned nursing unit, including creating and managing staffing plans and ensuring appropriate equipment and resources are available to staff to do their job.
  • Ensure appropriate and timely use of bed placement technology and adherence to care processes for bed placement/patient transfer/patient transport/room cleaning and patient discharge.
  • Ensure the safe transition of patients through the continuum of care to include active participation of nursing staff in planning and coordinating patient care, and direct hand-off to next appropriate level of care.
  • Be accountable for meeting operational budgets for assigned department.

Qualifications
Required Education/Experience/Specialized Skills:
Associate's degree plus five years applicable clinical experience, two of which in a leadership role.
Requires excellent skills in communication, problem-solving, team development, planning and follow-through.
Ability to exercise the authority and responsibility for assigned services based on the scope of the organization and complexity of patient care.
Graduate of an accredited program

Required Certification/Registration:
Maintains current California RN license.
Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS and ACLS certification and all competencies/certifications required of the charge RN on the unit.

Preferred Education/Experience/Specialized Skills/Certification:
Bachelor's/Master's degree or MSN preferred.
Certification in area of specialty preferred if applicable. Critical care/ED or step-down experience highly preferred.
