Reporting to the Director of Rehabilitation Services, the Manager of Rehabilitation Services -Chicago is responsible for the coordination and efficient management of rehabilitation services provided to RML-Chicago hospital patients. The manager works with Chicago staff to foster a knowledgeable and empowered clinical practice environment that is attentive to providing excellent patient care and customer service. The manager provides, and ensures that rehabilitation staff provide, age and developmentally appropriate care to adult and geriatric patients.

The RML-Chicago Rehabilitation Manager works closely with the Director and the rehabilitation supervisory staff at RML-Hinsdale to ensure that one standard of rehabilitation care is provided to all patients at both sites. The Manager acts in the absence of the Director, and is able to provide support to rehabilitation operations at both sites.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Exemplifies the RML REACH (Service Excellence) culture by demonstrating respect, excellence, appreciation, concern and honor in all interactions with patients, families and co-workers, and as identified in departmental and hospital wide behavioral expectations.
  • The manager ensures that policies and procedures, standards of care and standards of practice to support high quality care are in place, known to staff, and adhered to. In collaboration with the Director, the manager evaluates rehabilitation clinical practices and protocols, implementing changes under the direction of the Director. The manager supports the Director in ensuring best practices in clinical care, equipment selection and use, and infection control methods.
  • The manager completes the biweekly department payroll, and supervises the payroll and non-payroll budgets of the rehabilitation service. The manager analyzes budget variances and, in collaboration with the Director, takes active steps to improve efficiency and reduce costs wherever possible.
  • Is knowledgeable of and supports the Director in ensuring compliance with all appropriate regulatory agencies with relevance to the type of care and services provided, such as IDPH, The Joint Commission, HCFA, OSHA, CDC, etc.
  • Under the guidance of the Director and in cooperation with the Human Resources Department, assists in recruitment of staff, and screening, interviewing, hiring and orientation of new employees. Completes all necessary documentation related to the hiring process. Responsible for developing a department environment that supports staff retention.
  • Ensures the orientation of all department staff, including agency personnel, to the hospital and Rehabilitation Services. Evaluates the competence of all regular and contract staff on an ongoing basis and maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Supervises the work of all rehabilitation staff responsible for patient care, including contract services (agency.) Develops the rehabilitation staff, providing guidance, counseling, and discipline as appropriate to ensure compliance with patient care standards and hospital policy. Keeps the Director informed of staff performance on an ongoing basis, and collaborates on individual staff corrective action plans.
  • Assures staff compliance with mandatory educational programs, promotes staff development, and encourages participation in organization functions, task forces and committees.
  • In collaboration with the Director, the manager ensures that staff are well informed on a timely basis of department and hospital-wide information and expectations. Utilizes various methods to ensure effective communication with staff, including monthly staff meetings with documented minutes.
  • Is knowledgeable of and ensures that self and staff provide patient care that is appropriate to the age and developmental status of adult and geriatric patients.
  • In collaboration with the Director, is responsible for department purchasing activities. Monitors consumption of rehabilitation care supplies and establishes appropriate PAR levels. Ensures that a continuous and accurate mechanism is in place to capture patient charges and to address lost charges.
  • In collaboration with the Director, is responsible for department specific issues related to Risk Management. Responsible for risk identification, follow-up interventions and documentation, and related reporting. Develops strategies with staff to improve patient safety in the delivery of rehabilitation care services.
  • Assists the Director in identifying and monitoring rehabilitation quality indicators. Reports to appropriate committees as assigned. Supports the Director in implementing program specific performance improvement activities, and participates in facility wide P.I. initiatives.
  • Actively collaborates with other Chicago-based hospital departments to ensure the effective integration of their services with the Rehabilitation Services Department.
  • Is responsible for promoting a safe work environment for self and staff. The manager assesses safety issues within the department, and obtains necessary equipment and supplies to reduce staff risk. The manager ensures that staff are educated on safety practices applicable to their work environment, and monitors staff compliance.

    MINIMUM

    PREFERRED

    Skills & Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of rehabilitation care procedures and equipment, in order to recommend and perform therapy for high acuity, medically complex ventilator dependent patients.

    Analytical ability to manage the assigned resources, assess and evaluate staff performance, and implement goals.

    Interpersonal skills necessary to consistently interact in a professional and respectful manner with staff, patients, families, medical personnel, and other members of the healthcare team.

    Clinical and technical skills to work with high technology equipment and computers, and the attention to detail necessary to maintain accurate and timely records and reports.

    Knowledge & Experience
    • Graduate of an accredited program for physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech language pathology.
    • Baccalaureate degree
    • Three years inpatient rehabilitation experience.
    • Management/ supervisory experience required.

    Masters degree preferred.

    License & Certifications
    • Illinois clinical license in specialty required.
    • Current CPR required.

    Specialty certification preferred.
