POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager, Science Education is responsible for the development and execution of the scientific content for the Annual Meeting, small scientific meetings, scientific workshops, webinars, and online programs. The manager also oversees the evaluation of these programs including the development of recommendations for their improvement. The Manager, Science Education will also work with the Director, Scientific Affairs to develop new approaches to enhance the scientific content presented during the Annual Meeting; identify effective virtual learning strategies for researchers and assist with orientation of the ASH Scientific Committee leadership which will include approaches to foster engagement and interaction between the leadership of these communities. This person will be expected to collaborate extensively with other departments (i.e., Education, Communications, Meetings, Information Technology teams etc.).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Annual Meeting
  • Manages the development of the Scientific program by working directly with the Annual Meeting Program Co-chairs, ASH Scientific Committees and the Committee on Scientific Affairs.
  • Supports current, incoming, and newly appointed ASH Annual Meeting Scientific Program Co-chairs and Scientific Committee leadership in the planning and execution of the Scientific Program.
  • In collaboration with the Meetings and Education department manages the development, execution, and evaluation of Annual Meeting related content under Scientific Affairs' purview including the Scientific Program, Scientific Workshops, Special Scientific Symposia, Scientific Spotlights, Meet-the-Scientists, and Poster Walks.
  • Manages the vetting of the draft Scientific Program in preparation for Program and Executive Committee approval.
  • Supports the Program Committee's discussions in collaboration with the Education Department.
  • Collaborates with Communication and Marketing on the promotion of content under Scientific Affairs purview including, Scientific Program, Scientific Workshops, Special Scientific Symposia, Scientific Spotlights, Meet-the-Scientists, and Poster Walks.
  • Reviews for accuracy, all Scientific Program content in all Annual Meeting related publications.
  • Develops and executes peer-review process and all other evaluations of the Annual Meeting programs pertaining to Scientific Affairs.
  • Collaborates with the Information Technology department on new programs and software to enhance the efficiency of developing Annual Meeting content.
  • Works with Director, Scientific Affairs to develop strategies to enhance the scientific content presented during the Annual Meeting and engagement of budding scientific communities

Small Scientific Meetings and Online Science Education
  • Manages the execution and evaluation of all online content under Scientific Affairs' purview including the Career Series, Precision Medicine Webinar Series, and Journal Club.
  • Develops proposals for scientific meetings and online scientific programs that serve the needs of biomedical scientists.
  • Facilitates the review and approval of said proposals with the Committee on Scientific Affairs, ASH Officers and/or ASH Executive Committee.
  • Manages the planning and execution of scientific meetings and online scientific programs including speaker and content management.
  • Reviews for accuracy, content in all publications related to the small scientific meeting and/or online scientific content.
  • Collaborates with the Information Technology department on new programs and software to facilitate the execution of small scientific meetings and online science education.
  • Collaborates with Communications and Marketing teams on the promotion small meetings and educational content that fall under Scientific Affairs' purview.
  • Develops and executes evaluations for these types of programs and makes appropriate recommendations to the Director, Scientific Affairs and Chief Scientific Officer.

Volunteer Support
  • In collaboration with the Director, Scientific Affairs, supports the efforts of the Scientific Program Co-chairs, Scientific Committee Chairs and Scientific Committee Vice Chairs.
  • Assists with the yearly orientation of the ASH Scientific Committee leadership.
  • Supports community building tools that would foster engagement and interaction between the Scientific Committee leadership.

Management Responsibilities
  • Manages the Science Education Specialist - Programs and Science Education Specialist - Annual Meeting and conducts their annual performance evaluations.
  • Develops and maintains the budget for the Scientific Committees, and online science education.
  • Collaborates with the Meetings department on the development of the budget for the small scientific meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences or another related field. Master's Degree preferred.
  • At least five years of experience independently planning and coordinating logistics for scientific meetings.
  • Management experience required.
  • Experience with programmatic administrative support and project management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to multi-task, manage multiple deadlines and assignments simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize and execute multiple high-quality programs and activities on budget and according to established timelines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration with internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to work under pressure and always conducting themselves in a professional manner.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with staff, members/non-members, meeting attendees and vendors.
  • Experience in speaker management, communications, customer service.
  • Experience using speaker management software (e.g., Confex, M-anage)
  • Experience using presentation management software (e.g., Orchestrate)
  • Experience in the use of databases (i.e., Personify, Salesforce).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Prior experience in a not-for-profit environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of adult learning practices and emerging technologies for education delivery to research professionals (desired).

PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to use computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
  • May require some out-of-town work travel.
