Job Summary and Qualifications

Within HCA Healthcare's Information Technology Group (ITG), the Accelerated Technologies department is integral to enabling the Company's strategic focus of transforming care and enhancing care quality. ITG Accelerated Technologies supports development and delivery of various products, features, and functionality used by clinicians and operators across the Company. The team also heavily partners with the Digital Transformation & Innovation (DT&I) department, supporting their aim to deliver breakthroughs in patient and care team outcomes through clinically led integration of technology into care.

The Manager Software Engineering position will be directly responsible for a software engineering team; the delivery and operations for new and existing products; software development and mentoring; leadership and oversight of agile execution and product lifecycle; development of solution vision and goals; responsible for ensuring and maintaining operational integrity and scalability of delivered products.

This person will provide leadership and technical skills that cover software engineering, cloud and data platforms, and/or a particular technical discipline that is of significance to HCA Healthcare. Manage any technical project assigned with minimal supervision. Identify, investigate, evaluate and become proficient in new technologies and technical disciplines that are of significance to HCA Healthcare.

This position supports the foundational elements of a software engineering team, while tackling the leading edge of software development and delivery in healthcare. This critical leadership role defines operational success, communicates with stakeholders (end users and business leaders) and mentors software engineers.

The manager will be a key contributor to design sessions, providing input on the long-term viability of proposed solutions, and offering guidance to improve prototypes based on feedback.

The software engineering manager recruits and develops strong engineers and developers through mentorship. Keeping an open door to junior engineers, this person will mentor and grow the culture of software engineering in the organization and support individuals on a growth path. This person seeks individuals with the right mentality to work quickly and efficiently on stable infrastructure.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Professional software development experience including designing and implementing distributed computing applications that are scalable, reliable, and highly-available.
  • Functional design skills, understanding of open source software design patterns and data science models.
  • Experience with system architectures, web application development, and system instrumentation.
  • Software engineering skills, preferably in JavaScript, Python and SQL.
  • Experience with cloud development technologies, preferably Google Cloud Platform, Azure, and Databricks.
  • Good knowledge of data science concepts.
  • Ability to rapidly explore new technologies to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Ability to exercise sound problem solving skills and deliver high value solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong presentation skills.
  • Comfortable performing many project roles without concern of positional appropriateness.
  • Ability to influence strong personalities.
  • Experience and/or ability to be responsible for HR, F&A, and legal aspects of product delivery.
  • Lead, influence, and mentor team in agile projects.
  • Technical leadership and mentoring of engineering team members.
  • Work with business product owners and stakeholders across the organization to accomplish objectives.
  • Use a consultative approach to understand business and technical goals to help teams across varied groups develop and refine technical strategy and solution.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of software and technical solutions.

  • Working knowledge and experience with key DevOps processes, particularly change management is preferred.
  • Use of CI/CD tools and DevOps mentality valuable.
  • Working knowledge of EHR systems helpful: MEDITECH, Epic, and Cerner
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in a leadership role preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in a related field required
