Position Context:

Under the supervision of the Director, the Manager Technical Design , will manage the work of the Building Technologist group, be the architect of some technical projects and provide technical assistance to the architect's team. The goal is to ensure the preparation of comprehensive and well coordinated set of plans and specifications for McGill Facilities projects. The incumbent will be a key member of the design team, with primary responsibility for providing professional expertise for interpreting user needs and preparing for designs that reconcile building constraints, planning priorities and building code requirements and translating in construction detailing, drawing conventions and specifications writing. Verifies that the designs comply with all applicable legislations.

Typical projects are leading edge research laboratories, multi-media active learning classrooms, teaching laboratories, offices, service infrastructure renewals, and building envelope renovations.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manage the activities of the technical team (5 employees) to ensure project deliverables are produced on time, within budget and to the satisfaction of the client.
  • Manage and develop technical projects (interior renovation, maintenance, building envelop, etc).
  • Conduct construction site supervision for several simultaneous technical projects.
  • Ensures a quality review of all contractual documentation including technical plans & specifications (various phases of design advancement and for tender), as well as legal documents related to design construction projects.
  • Develop the technical aspects of the projects design and standards for the University.
  • Provide senior professional expertise to help the clients define their needs and develop architectural design programs in consultation with the user/client and other interested University constituencies.
  • Manage the production of a fully coordinated set of architectural working documents including drawings and specifications. This will include revisions to existing working drawings as required.
  • Provide professional services to provide design development and direction from concept through to completion.
  • Undertake all responsibilities in a cooperative manner with all associated project team parties conducive to the successful completion of the projects.
  • Consults with McGill Stakeholders to develop the construction standards.
  • Develop design processes, review and quality processes, templates and tools to facilitate the activities of the technical team.
  • Manage and report on the financial, time and staff assignment in conjunction with the internal fees recovery Policy.
  • Develops standards architectural details and unit related policies for the preparation of documents
  • Reconcile designs to the Quebec Construction Code and provide code interpretation.
  • Participate in the implementation of new processes and initiatives that foster innovation in the field and update skills and knowledge.
  • Attend senior level meetings and represent the unit at internal and external meetings.


Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be a member of the Order of Architect of Quebec (OAQ).
  • Experience as a Project Leader is preferable.
  • Strong customer-service focus and ability to give clear direction. Must exhibit excellent attention to details as well as demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of local construction industry practices and procedures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian construction technology and architectural design conventions.
  • Knowledge of the Quebec Construction Code and the National Building Code of Canada.
  • Proven ability to multi-tasking and be well organized. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Strong ability to work in a PC environment using MS Office.
  • Must have advanced working knowledge of AutoCAD, REVIT and visual programs such as InDesign, Enscape and Sketch Up.
  • Good knowledge of current technology and building codes as they relate to construction and renovation in institutional buildings.
  • LEED and WELL certification are considered an asset.
  • English and French spoken and written.
