Manager, Thermal Hydraulics, MCFR
TerraPower is seeking a MCFR Thermal Hydraulics Discipline Manager that is responsible for supporting personnel and technical oversight for MCFR Thermal Hydraulics. This position will report to the MCFR Director of Engineering. The MCFR Thermal Hydraulics Discipline Manager will work to assure technical adequacy of work product from direct reports, develop and oversee engineering processes related to Thermal Hydraulics, provide personnel management to reports, and provide technical support and approvals for MCFR projects.
Responsibilities
Serve as the primary point of contact for MCFR Thermal Hydraulics
Act as domain expert in Thermal Hydraulics, establishing and enforcing best practices for TH analyses including everything from hand calculations to systems modeling to computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
Drive selection and custodianship of major TH analysis software and toolsets to support the needs of the MCFR project teams
Drive Verification and Validation (V&V) efforts for TH software in support of MCFR project needs and use cases
Inform engineering management of major emerging technical issues
Develop the engineering staffing plan for the discipline using input from the project
Support the hiring and onboarding processes by writing job descriptions, setting interview panels, performing interviews, and creating onboarding pages for hired employees
Develop, maintain, use, and incorporate discipline guidelines (e.g., design criteria, design guides, desktop instructions, design notes)
Ensure that work process execution and technical adequacy are in accordance with contract requirements, project standards and industry standards and executed per TerraPower procedures
Approve technical documents within the discipline
Manage growth of the Discipline and interface with Recruiting and Project Management as necessary to meet project demands, and interface with Recruiting
Provide oversight of technical tasks within discipline areas of responsibility
Conduct periodic team meetings with discipline engineers to ensure appropriate communication of discipline and project information including process improvements and lessons learned
Assign tasks to individuals within the discipline to support project objectives
Interface with project stakeholders to ensure tasks are prioritized appropriately and promote communication across the discipline
Support employee development through mentoring, training, 1:1s, professional development, goal setting, and challenging assignments
Perform personnel goal setting at beginning of year and evaluations at mid-year and year-end including input from appropriate sources internal and external to Engineering, and providing useful performance and career development feedback
Recognize the need and recommend obtaining external subject matter experts
Approve weekly timecard submissions for individuals within the discipline
Perform self-assessments of work processes and technical adequacy
Monitor and provide oversight of Design Verification and Quality related activities
Key Qualifications and Skills
B.S. degree or higher in Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical/Process Engineering, or equivalent
Minimum 8 years of related nuclear experience and 2 years of previous supervisory or mentoring experience is required for Level 12
For Level 13, minimum 10 years of related nuclear experience, demonstrated management experience in nuclear industry, and 5+ years of previous supervisory experience are required
Proficient in performing thermal hydraulic scoping analyses using hand calculations, such as determining pressure losses or temperature rises
Demonstrated expertise with one or more TH analysis techniques including at a minimum familiarity with both systems modeling techniques and computational fluid dynamics
Proficient in both SI (metric) and US Customary Units
Possesses demonstrated experience using one or more thermal hydraulics analysis codes
Proficient in computer code development and knowledgeable in modern programming tools, with emphasis on using Python to create analytical tools. Experience should include working with others in an existing and growing code base
Experienced preparing calculation packages within the procedures of an NQA-1 quality program
Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence
Candidate must be a self-starter and possess ability to coordinate and lead a design team's effort
Experience with common collaboration software - Atlassian Confluence and JIRA desired
Experience in verification and validation of software to applicable requirements such as NQA-1 is a plus
Project management or scheduling experience
