Primary Purpose:
Oversees the establishment and revision of bus routes. Handles prompt resolution of student transportation problems. Coordinates student transportation programs with principals, central office, parents, outside agencies, and others. Prepares current and long-range student transportation plans.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED
Bachelor's Degree preferred
College coursework in transportation, management, or other related fields preferred
Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Extensive progressively responsible experience, including considerable supervisory experience, in the scheduling, routing, and safe operation of a large fleet of school buses or similar fleet transportation system, or related field-preferred
Thorough knowledge of the scheduling, routing, and safe operation of school buses or other fleet vehicles
Knowledge of state-mandated safety requirements and procedures
Ability to analyze student transportation operations
Ability to deal courteously and effectively with school officials, parents, and others
Ability to supervise, directly or indirectly, large numbers of employees, including several layers of mid-level management
Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate staff

Experience:
3 - 5 years of supervisory experience in transportation and fleet operations
5 years of experience as a bus driver

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Supervises and coordinates all aspects of student transportation operations, including responsibility for the day-to-day operation of school buses.
  • Provides guidance and direction to the transportation depot managers and the transportation specialist responsible for special and alternative education pupil transportation and regularly meets with them for coordination, problem-solving, and planning purposes.
  • Coordinates with the department's staffing office to hire substitute bus operators and bus attendants for multiple locations.
  • Reviews and investigates serious student or bus operator problems and recommends or initiates appropriate action.
  • Prepares correspondence on student transportation issues for the department and other school system officials as required.
  • Confers with school officials, parents, and outside agency officials on student transportation problems, procedures, and requirements and recommends or initiates appropriate actions.
  • Answers mail and phone requests for information on bus routes and stop locations, and reviews requests for schedule changes.
  • Analyzes current and long-term student transportation requirements and provides plans for meeting requirements and improving operations.
  • Assists department in meeting management plans by developing objectives for transportation managers.
  • Assists operational supervisors in the handling of day-to-day problems, and acts as a resource person to supervisors on management and transportation questions.
  • Advises the director on the department's budgetary needs.
  • Coordinates review of the department's management efficiency program.
  • Develops and maintains a department library on pertinent transportation industry materials and management articles to assist the manager's delivery of service.
  • Keeps informed on transportation industry innovations and trends as they relate to division concerns.
  • Meets with other divisions/departments to promote interdisciplinary programs.
  • Acts as liaison between department, schools, and community.
  • Performs related work as required.
