Position Highlights
The Manager, Undergraduate Research develops, facilitates, implements, evaluates, and coordinates a wide variety of undergraduate research programs, initiatives, and experiences that serve students across the University of Arizona. This position is focused on undergraduate research engagement, implementing recommendations from the campus community around undergraduate research, integrating research into the university's undergraduate curriculum, and equitably scaling undergraduate research opportunities. The manager helps deliver more and better research experiences to University of Arizona students regardless of academic discipline or socioeconomic background. This role requires an innovative and creative problem solver and collaborative colleague who can help the campus community more fully realize the potential the University of Arizona has to connect all students to the scholarly activities of faculty and staff.
The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development (URSD), within the Division of Undergraduate Education in the Office of the Provost, supports collaboration and provides leadership for inclusive, transformative learning opportunities across all undergraduate programs at the University of Arizona through high-quality, accessible, and equitable programs facilitating student empowerment, persistence, and well-being that lead to degree completion.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Administration (40% or 16 hours per week on average)
  • Organize, coordinate, and execute the daily operational and administrative activities of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development (URSD).
  • Report to the Executive Director of URSD while collaborating very closely with the Director of Strategic Planning & Initiatives in Undergraduate Education, who will both provide guidance and review work for alignment with undergraduate research links to student experiences and to the university's undergraduate curriculum.
  • Facilitate the continued delivery and growth of Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs).
  • Implement recommendations around undergraduate research from the campus community.
  • Support integration of research experiences into the university's undergraduate curriculum.
  • Coordinate people, resources, space use, and more to maximize learning and engagement opportunities for participating and new students, with explicit inclusion of underrepresented groups.
  • Future supervision and oversight of 1-2 students and/or staff as URSD grows.

Communication and Connection (30% or 12 hours per week on average)

  • Serve as the point person for internal and/or external stakeholders for information about equitable engagement of university students in undergraduate research. Communications span in-person to synchronous and virtual to asynchronous social media and website.
  • Collaborate with diverse staff members, faculty, and students on student-facing activities, such as an undergraduate research showcase.
  • Foster links to undergraduate research efforts across campus, including in Research, Innovation & Impact, and in academic colleges or other units.
  • Create summary products such as an annual undergraduate research report or technical reports.
  • Create resources for students and faculty that help connect them to the undergraduate research opportunities available across campus. Examples include workshops, research skills training, social media, videos, web pages, spreadsheets or databases, and virtual tours.
  • Occasional strategic outreach and event participation.
  • Ensure guidelines and relevant policies, regulations, and ethical guidelines are communicated to all stakeholders.

Design and Planning (20% or 8 hours per week on average)

  • Foster and create new ways of engaging and supporting diverse students in undergraduate research experiences as opportunities are upscaled.
  • Develop and monitor project plans including timelines, resource requirements, and budgets.
  • Use assessment and evaluation tools and practices to continually improve URSD programs and practices, and other programs that the office helps to coordinate and facilitate across campus.
  • Develop new approaches, methods, or techniques for issues that are strategic in nature, varied, and involve evaluation and interpretation. Issues require significant innovation and creativity.

Upscaling Support, Finances, and Fund-Seeking (10% or 4 hours per week on average)

  • Foster support, including financial, for scaling equitable, high-quality undergraduate research experiences across academic disciplines at the University of Arizona.
  • Assist with grant applications and submissions or fundraising.
  • Develop budgets and track expenditures related to URSD activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic about supporting undergraduate student learning experiences.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate research best practices, techniques, and standards in service to students, faculty, staff, the university, and its partners.
  • Ability to foster engagement and support of students from diverse disciplinary and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Anticipatory, proactive work ethic and critical thinking skills to solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated organizational and program management skills, including the ability to plan, establish priorities, and successfully manage multiple critical projects and their deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups and individuals, including families, students, faculty, staff, administrators, and funders.
  • Skill in public speaking and presenting technical information to large, non-technical audiences in different environments.
  • Ability to perform work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Skill developing materials such as summary reports that present information about projects and their successes.
  • Supervisory or management skills of staff and/or student employees.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Creative suite, Box, Qualtrics, and web content management systems such as Drupal.
  • Experience with undergraduate research curriculum development and/or college teaching/pedagogical and mentorship practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership and/or managerial experience.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students and undergraduate research programs at a higher education institution.
  • Experience with University of Arizona administrative systems, tools, and processes.
  • Experience with evaluation and assessment, its implementation, and subsequent programming modifications and improvements.
  • Regular social media user and experience with other online communication platforms.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
