Job Description

We are currently recruiting for a Managing Director, Head of Portfolio Design & Construction (MD-PDC) within the Total Fund Management department. Reporting to the Senior Managing Director, Head of Total Fund Management, the candidate will be responsible for recommending both the long term and short-term portfolio design and construction targets that best fulfills the legislative mandate of maximizing investment returns without taking undue risk, with the aim of sustaining the CPP. The role will collaborate closely with the Office of the Chief Investment Officer and will work closely with the CIO in establishing portfolio design targets.

In this role, we are seeking someone with an extraordinary degree of problem-solving skills that can be applied in a complex and ambiguous environment. You can connect and optimize a varied set of research from different teams, often drawing on judgment, disciplined compromises, and sequenced deliverables. You inspire your group with novel approaches and the ability to look beyond current practices to the next edge of innovation. You command cause and effect of complex investment processes and anticipate performance across economic environments without recent precedent. An ability to ensure the sensibility of large, complex, multi-layered financial models is key. The successful candidate will bring an ownership mindset to the role, focusing the design targets through a robust investment framework and process.

Communication is a critical aspect of this role. You have a history of establishing and communicating clear goals to your team and ensuring strong collaboration among all team members. Extensive firm-wide communication is also vital to build the necessary connections with the overall CPPIB investment process, working closely with leaders across Investment Departments, Risk, the senior management team and the board. Finally, both small- and large-format communications with external audiences is an important means of maintaining a world-class portfolio design capability.

Role-Specific Accountabilities:
  • Manage team of seasoned investment professionals that spans the elements of overall portfolio design.
  • Identify and model all systematic risk factors that underpin portfolio performance and diversification. This includes research and testing of a wide range of scalable factors, including style, macro, and emerging factors such as climate change risk.
  • Forecast short and long-term financial markets and factor returns.
  • Develop and operate a factor-based portfolio optimization and construction process that establishes strategic asset and factor allocations for the total fund that are sensitive to alpha, leverage, and liquidity considerations.
  • Work closely with the investment program modeling teams to effectively express and incorporate a wide range of public and private investment programs and geographies into the total portfolio construction effort.
  • Communicate and engage within CPPIB at the group, department, organization and board levels as well as with external counterparts including peer funds and the academic community.


Qualifications
  • Ability to draw upon quantitative research, judgment, expert opinion, and peer collaboration in forging the overall direction of the entire CPPIB portfolio.
  • Ability to manage seasoned, quantitative investment teams.
  • Meaningful experience with a wide range of both public and private asset classes.
  • Portfolio construction and risk modeling experience.
  • Ability to tangibly exploit research for a large, complex continuously improving investment process.
  • Extraordinary communication skills, both one-on-one and in larger forums, with clear ability to convey complex concepts to senior, generalist audiences.
  • An undergraduate and graduate degree in Finance, Economics, or other quantitative fields is desired.
  • At least fifteen years of professional investment experience, with quantitative portfolio construction experience, a major plus.
