Market Risk Manager - Energy (Houston, TX)
The Glencore Risk Department is an independent function aiming to control front-line trading. The Risk Department ensures that the risk-reward of the trading books is properly understood by Glencore senior management and that the physical exposure of the business - e.g. oil cargoes, electricity generation, gas deliveries - is correctly valued.
This position requires the individual to monitor the risk embedded into the company portfolio and make sure it stays within the company's risk appetite. The role reports to the Head of Market Risk.

Market Risk Manager - Energy (Houston, TX)

Key Responsibilities:
Risk Assessment and Analysis:
- Conduct comprehensive market risk assessments for the US oil, gas and power trading activities, utilizing advanced quantitative models and simulations.
- Analyze price volatility, liquidity risks, and correlations across various energy markets to inform risk management strategies.
- Define and implement bespoke stress tests based on market conditions deterioration, specific risk quantification for communication and dissemination to the Senior Risk Management and Commercial teams
- Define and monitor predictive scenarios for portfolio risk to give a better understanding to management and desk on the positioning as market conditions evolve
Model Development and Validation:
- Develop and validate quantitative risk models for Value-at-Risk (VaR), stress testing, and scenario analysis.
- Ensure models are compliant with industry standards and regulatory requirements, and continuously improve model performance through back-testing and benchmarking.
- Handling databases and leveraging on data visualization software (Tableau/PowerBI) for effective presentation of metrics daily in dashboards.
Risk Reporting:
- Own the coordination, implementation, evolution and communication of the risk reports.
- Prepare and present detailed risk reports to senior management, highlighting key risk metrics, trends, and potential exposures.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure timely communication of risk-related information and insights.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Stay abreast of regulatory changes and their implications for market risk management in the energy sector.
- Ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements, including Dodd-Frank, EMIR, and FERC regulations, while implementing necessary compliance frameworks.
Risk Mitigation Strategies:
- Design and implement risk mitigation strategies, including hedging programs and limit structures, to optimize portfolio performance while minimizing risk exposure.
- Collaborate with trading desks to assess and manage market risks associated with trading strategies and positions.
Market Intelligence:
- Monitor market trends, news, and developments affecting the energy markets, providing insights to inform trading and investment decisions.
- Leverage data analytics and market research to identify emerging risks and opportunities in the energy sector.
Collaboration:
- Work collegially with the team and communicate effectively with the desk to understand the positioning of the desk and current market conditions
- Communicate results effectively with traders and senior management
- Engage with external stakeholders, including regulators and industry associations, to represent the company's interests in market risk matters.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree or above
- 6+ years of experience in market risk, specifically in US oil, US gas, or US power.
- Highly numerate, with good problem-solving and analytical skills
- Coding skills, notably in Python, are preferred.
- Communication skills - must be able to understand others' perspectives and relate complex ideas to different groups, including senior management
- The ability to challenge proposals constructively to help ensure they are robust, whilst maintaining excellent working relationships
- Must be able to work collegially in a team, flexibly handling a wide range of potential issues
- Must be capable of working with significant autonomy and ensuring analysis is focused on delivering practical business benefits, often in tight deadlines
What We Offer:
- The expected base salary ranges from $140K -$180K. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications and licenses obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
