Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director, Master Data Management (MDM) to join our growing Data Office Team and drive the strategic direction of our master data management initiatives. This role will be pivotal in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and accessibility of critical master and reference data assets, enabling the organization to make informed decisions and deliver exceptional value to clients. This role will work closely with various departments to help assess the current state and implement an enterprise grade solution to manage our master and reference data. This role requires a solid understanding of the financial services domain (specifically wealth and asset management), related business functions, operations, and terminology.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading MDM programs, implementing enterprise-grade MDM software solutions, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to establish robust data governance frameworks.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
Develop and execute the organization's Master Data Management strategy, aligning it with business objectives in the asset, wealth management and investment advisory space.
Act as a thought leader, driving innovation and best practices in data management to support investment decision-making, client reporting, and regulatory compliance.
Partner with senior leadership to identify and prioritize data initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and client outcomes.
MDM Implementation and Oversight
Lead the implementation, configuration, and optimization of enterprise MDM software solutions and have hands on experience implementing one or more of the vendor solutions in this space.
Oversee the integration of MDM systems with other enterprise applications, including portfolio management systems, CRM platforms, data warehousing and reporting tools.
Ensure the scalability, performance, and security of MDM solutions to meet the evolving needs of the business.
Core Areas of Master Data Management
Client Data Management: Ensure accurate and consistent client profiles, including onboarding, KYC (Know Your Customer), and segmentation data.
Product and Security Master Data Management: Manage data related to issuers, financial products, investment vehicles (securities), and fund structures.
Portfolio Data Management: Oversee the integrity of portfolio-level data, including holdings, transactions, and performance metrics.
Reference Data Management: Maintain and govern reference data such as security identifiers, benchmarks, and market classifications.
Entity Data Management: Manage data for legal entities, counterparties, and intermediaries to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.
Regulatory Data Management: Ensure data alignment with regulatory requirements, including reporting standards like MiFID II, SEC, and GDPR.
Data Governance and Quality
Establish and enforce master data governance policies, standards, and procedures to ensure data consistency, accuracy, and compliance with industry regulations.
Define and monitor key data quality metrics and KPIs, implementing corrective actions as needed to address data discrepancies.
Collaborate with stakeholders to identify critical data elements (CDEs), data owners and ensure they are properly managed across the organization.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
Work closely with investment teams, investment operations, portfolio managers, client service teams, IT, and compliance to understand data requirements and deliver tailored solutions.
Serve as the primary point of contact for MDM-related initiatives, providing regular updates to stakeholders on progress and outcomes.
Foster a culture of data stewardship across the organization, promoting awareness and accountability for data quality and governance.
Regulatory and Industry Alignment
Ensure MDM practices comply with relevant regulations, including SEC, FINRA, GDPR, and other applicable standards in the asset and wealth management industry.
Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously enhance the organization's data management capabilities.
Role Responsibilities and Expectations
Must be able to learn business processes, users' needs and what the data represents in order to meaningfully contribute to defining master data requirements and KPIs in collaboration with business teams.
Become an SME for our master data management solution and subsequently assist and train others.
Own the planning and execution of the master data management initiatives and future plans for enhancements to ensure a comprehensive solution is designed, implemented, and supported.
Provide guidance and solutions to help teams migrating to the MDM solution for current and new applications to ensure accurate and efficient data migration and seeding.
Be the champion for master and reference data along the entire data lifecycle from ingestion to transformation to consumption and any other steps in between as well including provisioning accurate historical data to support analysis and regulatory needs.
Leadership and Communication
Lead the master data management efforts in the organization.
Empower data owners to improve quality of our master and reference data through education, implementation of data validations and turning data observability outputs into actionable steps.
Must be able to communicate with varying audiences (e.g., senior management, IT, business teams, etc.) in order to convey new concepts and understand the goals and challenges they are working to achieve and overcome.
Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making, data stewardship, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Identify opportunities to drive efficiencies in our data transformation efforts and business processes using improved data management, quality, or automation.
Qualifications:
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Data Management or Science, or a related field. Master's degree is a plus.
Experience
8 years of experience in Master Data Management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
Extensive experience in the asset and wealth management industry, with a deep understanding of data requirements for portfolio management, client reporting, and regulatory compliance.
Proven expertise in implementing and managing enterprise MDM software solutions such as Informatica MDM, S&P EDM, GoldenSource, SAP MDG, Reltio, or similar platforms.
Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, data quality management, and metadata management.
Experience with data integration tools and technologies (e.g., ETL, APIs) and familiarity with cloud-based data and data warehousing platforms like Snowflake or Databricks
Skills and Competencies
Exceptional leadership and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels (technical and non-technical).
Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards in asset and wealth management domain.
Proficiency in SQL, Python, Gen AI tools, data modeling, and data visualization tools is a plus.
