Materials Engineer III

Position Overview:

Solid Power is seeking a Materials Engineer to join our talented team working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next-generation, solid-state electrolyte materials. Solid Power is a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative team environment. The Materials Engineer will be a part of the Electrolyte Technologies team, assisting personnel on a variety of projects relating to solid-state electrolytes, with a specific focus on synthesis, characterization, process development and scaleup.

Job Duties

• Design and implement highly systematic DOEs toward critical material development
• Conduct relevant characterization (e.g. physical, chemical and electrochemical) on electrolytes and electrode materials
• Participate with cross-functional teams to introduce and execute process improvements and/or equipment upgrades to improve electrolyte performance and manufacturability
• Maintain thorough and accurate records of all conducted experimentation
• Interface with Cell Technologies team to evaluate electrolyte properties' effect on cell performance, safety and quality
• Participate with cross-functional teams to develop next-generation materials and transfer developed materials and processes to the production scale
• Conform to all safety precautions and protocols
• Document and follow Solid Power's standard operating procedures and assist in drafting or improving procedures during process development
• Mentor junior team members, operators and interns

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science or related discipline
• 2+ years of experience in the chemical industry desirable
• Background in structural and/or synthetic chemistry
• Experience in sulfide based solid-state batteries, solid electrolyte synthesis and electrochemical testing is highly preferred
• Experience in material characterization techniques (e.g. XRD, TGA, DSC, FT-IR, Raman)
• Hands-on experience working with hazardous materials, dry powder processes, and wet chemical/slurry and solvent-based operations
• Excellent work ethic and ability to quickly demonstrate independence
• Ability to adapt to rapidly evolving research environment
• Structured problem-solving and analytical skills
• Excellent communication and organizational skills

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk.
• Ability to lift 10-20 lbs, up to 50 lbs occasionally.
• Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary including, but not limited to eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator or PAPR.

Salary Range: $100,000 - $135,000/annually
