Toronto Metropolitan University is reshaping the downtown core of Toronto with three new buildings: the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, the TMU Image Centre in the heart of campus, and a Student Learning Centre on Yonge Street. In addition, currently in progress is the development of a new multipurpose building, the Church Street development (CSD). This new building will be located just north of Dundas on Church Street and will be home to four academic health services programs, TMU food services, administration, and a student residence.

Course Description:

In this comprehensive course, students will gain a strong understanding of the design principles

and development considerations that encompass virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) applications, but also delve into the fundamentals of crafting unique user experiences and UI that accompany each area of Extended Reality (XR). Throughout this course, students will learn the methodologies to understand the fundamentals of developing for softwares such as Reality Composer, Blender, and Unity to craft an immersive UX. Additionally, students will have access to the Immersion Studio within the TMU Library, which will be instrumental in testing and developing immersive experiences.

Course Objectives:

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to current issues and trends in the emerging

area of XR, give exposure to design complexities for each, development processes and tools

for immersive experiences, and all the elements that make up a complete XR experience.

By the ends of this course, students will:

Understand the UI/UX considerations for designing for XR platforms.

Understand core concepts behind 2D & 3D content development and delivery for XR.

Articulate creative process and vision through design artifacts.

Develop critical thinking around emerging mixed reality technologies and their

future practical direction.

Gain familiarity with game engines that are driving and democratizing content creation,

as well as the underlying production methodology that links content and logic together.

Gain hands-on exposure for developing a complete user experience for immersive VR

Spaces.

    Course delivery may be online, in-person, or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired to support in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching and/or other duties on campus.     While applicants may submit Faculty/Course Survey results from Winter 2020 through to Winter 2023, these results will not be used as evidence of teaching effectiveness by the Contract Lecturer Appointment Committee due to the impact of COVID-19 on these semesters. A negative inference will not be drawn if FCS results are not submitted for these semesters. Alternate evidence of teaching effectiveness may be provided by the candidate for consideration by the CLAC.
