Job Description
This Mechanical Engineering Manager will provide direct and indirect leadership to Engineers within the business unit, so that products or services are delivered in response to customer needs. The Manager will carry out the strategic plan by meeting the goals and objectives within projects/tasks for the design, improvement, analysis, and documentation of products or services. The Manager will have responsibility for assessing current/future project staffing, filling gaps as needed, as well as managing un-planned requests for support. The Manager will provide guidance and mentorship to the team, to foster increased skill development. The Manager will reinforce compliance to company policies, and support company initiatives for process improvements and standards.

Job Description

Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Identifies resources needed (e.g. staffing, training, equipment, facilities, and budget), both internal and external, that are needed to accomplish the planned objective. Responsible for working with peers across the organization to leverage other resources when needed.
- Effectively engages in staff planning that helps to ensure the department is appropriately staffed to accomplish its goals and objectives.
- Clearly explains job duties, responsibilities and priorities to team members. Checks to ensure that employees understand duties and responsibilities, which are used to establish performance goals that are clear, specific, and attainable.
- Assesses and verifies candidate qualifications thoroughly and accurately, recognizing and hiring/promoting those who possess the skills needed to fulfill vacant positions.
- Explains relationship between individual work tasks and overall organizational objectives. Continually rethinks job duties and responsibilities as organizational objectives shift, and communicates new roles and responsibilities to employees as appropriate.
- Encourages departmental staff to attend relevant training and workshops to broaden skills, explaining why training is relevant to employee's career and improves the performance of the company.
- Efficiently delegates tasks so that organizational goals are met within established timelines. Delegates tasks that are not central to the leader's role and which allow the leader to use worktime more effectively.
- Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members by seizing opportunities and utilizing creative methods to build team cooperation and cohesion.
- Directs the preparation of highly accurate and precise estimates of costs, obtaining recent cost estimates from internal allocations or external vendors.
- Directs the preparation of budget justifications and proposals that reflect the needs of the department, submitting proposals that are thorough & accurate, and that receive management acceptance and approval with little or no additional questions.
- Consistently seeks to perform tasks in a cost-efficient manner, identifying ways to produce high quality results while utilizing the right resources, by creating an organizational climate in which cost effectiveness is valued and rewarded.
- Makes healthy use of discussion to promote learning and expand team perspectives, encouraging the parties to work together towards problem resolution by working with the parties to identify a range of acceptable solutions and when appropriate, proposes effective compromises that satisfy some of each party's needs. Ensures mutual commitment to a solution.
- Solicits feedback from multiple sources during and following task completion, to ensure employee tasks are performed correctly and to learn how employee and team performance can be improved.
- Other related duties as assigned by Senior Management.
Qualifications
- Master's degree is optional
- Bachelor's degree is required
- Specific Degree Field Required: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical disciplines
- 10+ years of experience working in a product development role
- Proficient in the design of parts/assemblies/drawings using SolidWorks, or similar tools
- Proficient in conducting structural/thermal analysis using ANSYS and similar engineering analysis packages
- Demonstrated experience leading a team of Engineers
Skills and Abilities
- Successful experience in managing an Engineering team in a for-profit company.
- Recognized leadership abilities and willingness to take initiative and ownership.
- An understanding of how to manage programs and projects, through manufacturing best practices, and good supply chain management.
- Ability to manage product or service staff to accomplish successful business results by working effectively in teams while solving technical or administrative problems.
- Ability to implement product or service goals and monitor their progress.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, tailored to the appropriate audience.
- Ability to communicate to department and senior management with suggestions and critical feedback.
- Effectively change plans, goals, actions or priorities to deal with changing situations, changing gears in response to unpredictable or unexpected events.
- Have computer skills that include using electronic information for timely decisions.
- Knowledge of the defense and military industry with some specific knowledge about the external customer base for the assigned product.

Travel/Physical Requirements
- Role is onsite at ESA's Roanoke, VA location
- 5% travel may be required (approx. one week every three months)
- Work is usually conducted in an office setting, Engineering Lab, or assembly area
- Hearing, vision, and breathing protection provided, when needed in appropriate areas
- Some exposure to elements of weather when traveling and/or moving between buildings
- Overtime may be required on occasion
